Hi everyone, I’ve just gotten a marketplace 3.08 LSD diff for the VX as the one that’s in it now has definitely seen better days. I was wondering if there was a way to tell if the new lsd diff is any good before putting it into the car? Thanks everyone

It's pretty hard to tell out of a car. If it's out of another SS chances are it's high kms and those clutches are worn. Only way to be sure is to strip it and rebuild it with a better centre like a Kaaz, Wave or Truetrac

Most cone diffs will be worn out and need machining and shimming. They can be tested using a torque wrench.

I’m not too sure what it came out of to be honest the previous owner bought it for his car but he since sold it and kept it on the side for a few years until I bought it. I opened up the back casing and it was spotless no large shards or metallic oil, it was actually pretty clean it surprised me to say the least. What’s everyone’s thoughts on it? Thanks

Oh ok I’ll most likely get it looked at by a specialist then as it’ll most likely be worn. What do you think about the pics I’ve just posted up of it? Not worth the risk of throwing it in? Thanks!

Losh is correct, you can measure what is called the "break away" torque. Basically the torque required to make the LSD slip as a mechanical function. IIRC for the factory LSD Holden say 105Nm of torque but in reality you want a bit more for a sporty type diff.

Oh ok sweet I’ll have to give this a go. What do you torque up to check the diff? Would it be the yoke or something? I’ve never done one before. Thanks bud!
