Anything with an end rating of 50 or 60 i believe suits the commodores. The start number, 5-10-15-20-25 doesnt really matter, that should only change if your buring oil on startup. I think Holden specify these thinner oils due to the fact that you get better economy out of it which is what i have witnessed with a thinner oil.

Oil Change....

Just Changed my Oil and Filter....
Noticed a bit of a lifter type Rattle coming from engine at the Traffic Lights this morning, and thought, 2500km...what the hell.... I used Nulon 10/40 syn last change, and at the time I bought 2 6ltr bottles coz they were on special..., so.....

Today I used Nulon 10/40 Full Synthetic and Ryco filter, Just been down the street, and Rattle sound has gone...... Oil was Black as, so it was doin it's job cleaning!! I think Nulon is good Oil, but maybe can't last the distance......I normally change it anywhere before 5000k's, but 2500 is a bit soon, and it was real Black, Castrol Edge was never this dark!!

Who is most people?

As i said, talk to any decent performance workshop they will use 10w 60, talk to any oil specialist who is also an LS1 enthusiast, they will say the same thing.

People use 10w 30 because holden say so. I used to have oil samples taken every 2000km in my last job(didnt cost a thing) and the 10w 60 always rated better.

But hey, what do i know, forget i said anything :)

don't get snarly with me busta...it was just a question as i didn't know there was a 10w - 60 thank you....

vy chrisso- black isnt such a problem. My last oil change in the VT was a black as the ace of spades.

Its the breakdown of the oil itself, loss of high temp viscosity and shear resistance that enables a lifter tap when the oil is used. My last change was 30 000k's with no lifter noise because even thought the oil was black it still had its 'body'. Althought you had to listen carefully because of the idle tensioner noise....

if needed mod's are intake temp sensor resistor 2 1/4 cat back no rear muffler and the thing where you take out ecu fuse for 5 mins (reset idle i think) and pod in air box with duct behind bumper cheer's

Righto - you wanted best, right?

budget- Penrite HPR15 15w60 at (I think) $25 odd for 5 litres
best- PM lubricants motorlife 20w50 or endurance 25w60 depending on how spirited at $55 for 5 litres

I wouldnt consider anything full synthetic.

Penrite is designed for 5000 l changes, pm for longer so in reality they are almost the same cost not considering the cost of an extra filter for penrite, or courier for Pm, filter about $6 and courier about- $11 I believe

Spirited driving tends to break down something cheaper, whereas the above mentioned are designed for shear resistance/ load carrying ability. They are both designed to withstand heat but penrite will break down faster.
