If you intend on getting a personised plate that you can transfer from car to car, without it being specific to any one car, I would suggest initials, and date of birth, and in what ever colour you like .
These don't scream 'look at me' and can be subtle with a personal reference.

In WA we have district plates. Each shire/city has a two or three letter prefix followed by a number.

MH - Mandurah
EP- East Pilabra
BY- Bunbury


Perth has generic state plates.

They make for a cheap alternative to private plates. They can be done in retro styles too.
