Is this Juriga a GM engineer? Interesting comment in the last paragraph about owners should ignore the knock. If it were a Toyota would they say this? I think not. If you are an owner and you are trying to sell your car and the prospective buyer comes around before you've got time to warm the engine what do you do?

John Juriga was assistant chief engineer on the Gen 3 project. He worked on the development of these engines from 1992.

The last paragraph is a broad statement to owners of '97 to '01 engines. If you have had problems, Holden will fix or swap it depending upon the severity. How much more can you ask for than that?

The important thing to remember is that all mass-produced engines suffer from "cold piston knock" to some degree. The all alloy contruction of the LS1 just makes it more audible.

And to further put this situation into perspective: A BMW M3 (which also has an alloy block) will consume up to 2.5 litres per 1,000km. BMW say this is normal and refuse to do anything about it.

Now, what's better? At least GM acknowledged that there was a problem and did something about it, authorising Holden to do rebuilds & engine swaps on bad engines...
