When I start my car it makes this noise.
I recorded it and youtubed it to send to holden before I book it in. ----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjHX5tvdeyg
They said it's the cam shaft actuator. I'm dropping it off next week for a warranty repair.

I just want to know how 'bad' it is and any background info. i.e. do the timing chains need to be replaced at the same time? or do they put the same ones back on when it's repaired? Is it a big job for them to fix it?

Any info would be good.

I've got 2012 VE Series II - 78,000 kms

thanks :D

If there is a fault with a camshaft position actuator the diagnostic check will throw up codes and they will investigate the cause from there.

There are a number of possible causes for malfunction so they will have to run tests to identify the specific cause in your case. They may well just find a problem with an actuator solenoid. You have to leave it to them to run the test procedures and find the cause so there is no point in asking people to speculate on what repairs or replacements will need to be addressed.

At what kms was the oil last changed in the engine and what type of oil and viscosity of oil was put in the engine last time.

It's got 77,xxx kms. It was last serviced at 70,000 kms using Penrite 5W30 oil.
It's been making a version of the noise for about 15,000 kms. Gradually worsening over time.

Could it be the starter gear not engaging the fly wheel correctly?

OP hasn't logged on for about 18 months, don't hold your breath, but you might get lucky.
Be mindful that even though you think its the same noise, it could be something else. If you don't have any contact with the OP, it would be worth getting it checked out by a competent mech. Noises seldom get any better. Good luck.

Could be the timing chain on the timing case as well.

Is it usually a cold start?,
and/or when it’s been sitting a while ?
then disappears after approx 5 seconds,
What year ?,
How many K’s ?

Can you provide a small video of the noise that may assist with some
answers comments from other members.
