Noise from L98, but not belts.

Hi there guys,

My 08 SS is making a 'squeaking/tapping' noise.

I can't pinpoint where it is coming from, and have had a mechanic look at it and he's non the wiser either. Sounds like a belt, but after taking off both the serpentine and the AC belt, the noise continued. Sounds like it is resonating thru the engine??

Changed the oil as that was due, and noise remains.

Has anyone had this before?

Could be a lifter that is about to fail.

I think there was a thread on this issue in the last week or so. Something about Worn Camshaft lobes / Lifter Probs. Have a look down the Threads. This person had the same issue.

Just got back from an engine recon place, and he has ruled out the engine. He believes it is in the Transmission.
I am taking it back on Wednesday to get fully checked, and hopefully have an answer.
There was no noise coming from the Camshaft so thats a relief. Maybe only temporary relief. Will see on Wednesday.

Get a second opinion. Failed lifters munching your cam lobes can sound exactly like belt chirping and is a common issue.

Sounds louder at the back drivers side of the engine from what I could hear.

The mechanic put his stethoscope all round the engine, and thinks the sound is coming from around the bell houseing area.

speedo cable?? had this problem on a triton

VE's don't have speedo cables and it was at a stand still.
