Just an update on my situation in case anyone ever comes looking for an answer to the same question:

Super easy, took 2 minutes total from start to finish.

1. Put gear selector in drive
2. Remove ashtray from centre console
3. Stick hand in the hole where ashtray was and pull the console surround up. It will simply unclip. You might want to put the gear selector into 1st now. You don't need to take the console surround off completely, just move it back a bit so it's out of the way. You don't need to worry about unplugging the cigarette lighter.
4. At the bottom of the controls surround you'll see 3 screws. Unscrew them.
5. Gently pry the surround off. It will come off completely.
6. Fish your aircon switch out from the netherworld.
7. Push it back into relevant hole in the surround, secure somehow (I just kinda wedged mine back in there, it seems to be holding).
8. Reposition controls surround in place and clip on.
9. Screw the three screws back in - careful, don't screw too tight, I noticed my surround started to crack a bit
10. Put gear selector back into drive, line up the centre console surround and clip back on.
11. Replace ashtray.

Voila.

Can someone please tell me where the fuse box is on a VN commodore Calais? I've got no idea where it is and I need to check the lighter fuse as the lighter is not working so need to test if it's just the fuse or the wiring.

Thanks in advance for your help all...

I've got a bit of a problem with mine. I've pretty much pulled the centre console out, glove box as well, climate control all that stuff but its not as straight forward. I can't get to the wires, it's almost like its inside the dash I can't get behind it all just no space. What do I do ? Pull the whole dash out and how do I do it ? Or is there something else that I'm forgetting ? Or do I just rip the whole dash out and all the plastics which I don't wanna do but just about to flip out and go ape **** on it lol
