Valve Body Training Part 2

The weather was pretty crap today so I decided to continue with my valve body rebuild. I would like to document more of the process with photos, unfortunately I don't want to handle my DSLR with ATF soaked hands. So you kind of jump straight to the endgame. When I do the 535i I think I will organise an assistant to act as a second pair of eyes and photographer.

Photos below:

Rebuild complete. It's a really good idea to have a comfortable work position, and stay organised! There are so many tiny little pieces to misplace and or mixup. It has also been pointed out to me that the area should remain free of distraction. :drink:

uc

The 535i patiently waiting for her turn. I think she wants in out of the rain.

uc

The bolts remaining are those that mate the valve body to rest of the transmission. I used vaseline to hold checkballs, cups, springs, spacers, shafts, and plugs in place during assembly.

uc

This is the top of the reassembled valve body, the side that mates to the transmission proper.

uc

This is the bottom, pretty much all that goes here is the filter.

uc

Success! Reconnected to the transmission, and no mystery bits left over.

Oh man, I love these older BMs....I've spent so much time repairing the central locking in them I almost know them back to front now lol

Having practised on the transmission from my defunct 525i, I have sinced tackled the valve body in the 535i. In the course of sourcing some information I was assisted by a gentleman by the name of Shogun who is based in Japan and turns out to be a moderator on a number of BMW forums. When he found out my plans to rebuild the valve body he requested that I document the process for his website.

So here it is:

ZF 4HP22EH Valve Body Rebuild

The rest of Shogun's website makes for interesting reading for any Bimmer owners out there.

Brakes

It's pretty run of the mill but I did it, so it goes in the thread....

Bremtec Euroline Ceramic performance pads
RDA Slotted and Dimpled Rotors with Gun Metal finish.

I'll give it a few hundred K's before I push them but if they work anything like what came off the car I'll be happy.

The set as it came out of the box:

Ok, so got this thing home earlier today.

It's got more than a few issues, however they will have little to no impact on its intended use:-

From the front.

Sort of tidy for its age but not up to my usual standards.

Hint Hint!

254187 on the clock and more than a few electrical germlins.

Under the hood.

More updates to come during disassembly and storage.
