Automatic transmissions that are supposedly "sealed for life" and need no fluid changes. Seriously? How many on this forum, which principally attracts car enthusiasts, would service their engines regularly but leave the trans fluid untouched?
I've changed the trans oil on two cars each with "sealed" autos that had travelled over 100,000km. My daughter had purchased a brand new XC Barina in 2001 and typically, only carried out what the service schedule specified (and that was only after I pestered the **** out of her to even get the services done!) I bought the car from her at 105k and immediately gave it the once over, particularly the auto. The trans oil was pretty expensive, around $28 per litre in 2005, but when I dumped the old oil, it was as black as old sump oil. Must have been doing wonders for the auto.
Same with the last Captiva. 138k and I had it fully flushed and replaced by an auto trans specialist as I didn't have the tools to do the job. Again, black as tar.
Sealed for life? Yeah, as long as "life" doesn't mean any more than about five years.
