A bit of a noob question but as the title suggests, what are your thoughts on jacks and jack stands from auto part stores like Repco, Supercheap, Autobarn, etc?

Are they safe and of high quality?

TIA

Yeah, most are fine. There was a recall on a poor design a few years ago but I'd be fine using most.

I prefer the ones that have the pins going through the jack stand.

I use two types. One is threaded to adjust the height. Screws up and. Down. Very strong. The other two sets are a dual pin design. It’s a U shaped pin, so it’s supported in two places.

which brands were affected by the recall?
I don't know which brands where recalled, but the ones with a ratchet where recalled, because ratchet would slip & the part that goes up & down would come down. This would usually be when the car was in the air, possibly you would be under it.

I can't remember the brand but I have a number of those type of ratchet axle stands and still use them. Mine are fine, it has to do with the angle of the teeth. the bad ones were flat which would allow them to slip.

I have actually give the release arm a kick on mine with a car on it, didn't budge.

The new pin type ones are definitely safer however.

Doesn't really matter, no way you'd be able to buy them now.

I have one of the smaller powerbuilt trolley jacks, and it's got 3 points of locking. As in once you go past each point, if the ram looses pressure it will only lose height to the lock point (unless the release lever is activated, obviously).
I really like it as an extra point on safety.
