I know the subject of timing chains is on here alot and probably annoys a few. So sorry in advance lol.
Im purchasing a series 2 ve sv6.
The dealer has told me he has just put new timing chains in.
Is there a way I can tell this work has been actually carried out. Or do I just take his word for it?
Cheers
There is always evidence left where something has been changes but at the same time I knew a dogdy mob that sold cars that use to wash the engine with degreaso and paint with a small brush some gasket glue that leave a good line that has been removed "eg" timing Chain or other and a GOOD SMELL when the car gets hot. Again if you are good with cars or if not get someone that is experience with this because I would notice if the chain has been replaced in the last few months. Now if the engine had a chain replaced 8 years ago now that's different.

Only the Series 1 VE had legacy timing chain issues from 2009 to early 2010. There I'll be visible evidence around the top front and sides of the engine casing but you would need to get down and dirty. There is no reason to question or prove that the work has been done! Especially if you are unfamilar with these engines. Replacing timing chains is a specialist job requiring precision alignment and testing. The work cannot be flunked or slapdash and the engine then passed as fit for service: it must be done correctly. However, their replacement in a later Series 2 VE raises questions, and a forensic look into the car's history would be worthwhile.

You mean 2006-2007 yeah? That was considered the 'bad batch' era. Later VEs which suffered timing chain issues could generally be attributed to the ongoing poor PCV design and average servicing affecting the lubrication of the chain, hence some still stretched.

Even the later models have timing chain issues when milage gets high like over 250k , my dealer( Holden) told me to sell it at 200ks as its a lottery weather the engine lasts ...!

Likely. It would take 35 to 45,000km for a problem to manifest from factory to owner (about 2 years for most people back then; now 40,000km can be covered in 12 months in a VF) when noise and/or generation a cam-out-of-phase trouble code (symbolic of the worst cases of timing chain stretch or slip, and also would be the noisiest).

Timing chains would be the least of the problems in the VEs getting to 250,000km. Meanwhile, there are current-gen VFs that have clocked up 440,000km with nothing to report...

If you approach them like Karen from Brighton,

Is that the Johnny Walker swinging one...
"...you get sick of walking the same streets all the time, I mean...I've done all of Briiiiiiighton..."
And now she has packed up and shifted to Queensland.

I sold my October 2006 WM (SV6 donk) with 250,000kms on it and it still felt like it had another 250,000 left in it. No timing chain issues to speak of or any other mechanical drama. VEs, like VFs and most other Commodores, are more than capable of driving huge distances. Its owners are the problem.

Partly true. How and how far they are driven (in what environment) makes a big difference, especially for SiDi engines. They cannot clean themselves as well as Alloytecs and an accumulation of gunk from persistently poor quality driving (low speed, stop-start around the 'burbs etc.) will take its toll on the engines.

My 2 cents even if there are no lights faults etc the chain codes can be turned off by some dealers with the right computer nous etc . From a South Australian living in Tasmania for 10 years no sign of second head growing yet LOL
