Hey guys with the variatronic steering how does it behave with the solenoid disconnected? Does anyone know if there is any aftermarket controller or circuits you can make to use it in a non variatronic steering car..I know it could be easier to change back to normal power steering but the car has been modded with a vs dash, steering column and intermediate shaft and I love a challenge lol

When I forgot to plug mine back in the steering was quite heavy (more so than regular non variatronic power steering) but not as heavy as no power steering.

I drove my VS Calais around without the solenoid, due to the delay in sourcing a new one back in the day. Long time ago, but I don't remember having any significant issues. Someguy360's comments sound quite accurate.

There should be a 6-9V signal at the solenoid terminal- fluctuation between these limits is acceptable from the BCM supply. The BCM supplies a pulsing current that varies in a straight line from 0.6A (car stationary) to zero amps at 80km/h.

I don't know how you can easily do this without a BCM.

If there's no current to the solenoid the system reverts to the high speed (high effort) mode.

Refer to the attached VR/VS information. It may give you what you are looking for. VN should be similar.

Someone might know of an easier way but I suspect you might need to install a BCM, a level 3 dashboard and associated wiring.

ok might be on the right track...

Using a High Series BCM

12 volt to pins to C1 and C9
Ground to A18
and test lead to pin B16 (Power steering Solenoid Output)

Result is 10 Volts at b16...next test will be with speedo connected
I can see this working....

On a VQ the power steering solenoid connects to terminals C12 (BR/W) and C15 (B/G).
