It is then used by a technician with a high end interface (Like a Tech2) plugged into the cars network to reflash the headunit and facia so the VIN numbers match. Then the CANbus system sees the VIN matches and all security checks are done. That then allows the car to start.

VIN: Vehicle Identification Number.
CANbus: Controller Area Network bus. (Bus being a cars network)

i believe a used headunit must be unlinked before removing from donor vehicle
as you cannot change a vin in a module
needs to be confirmed

I had a used headunit from a series 2 installed into my series 1. Jason from Envyous Customs did it. The head unit had not been unlinked by the wrecker.

I’m not sure what or how Jason did it. He did use a computer but he is a master in the dark arts of Commodores.

Also not all the components of the facia are vin matched. I did a bit of swapping of internal parts in the facia to make a working one.
I posted photos of it here on the forum. I don’t know where though. I’d have to search. I’m betting that I reused the VIN matched component though because it all worked when I put it back together.

jason actually rewrites the eeproms
a specialist job
a lot of voodoo involved
Actually is very easy and eeprom programmer and basic knowledge can do it I do them all the time, same as bcms
