Hi mate

How did you go with the gearbox whine?
I have a 08 omega 4spd 3.6, & does the same thing! The whine (which is similar to a diff noise - best way to describe it & no its not the diff), starts also around 50kmh through to 60kmh approx.
It's not tyre noise, Diff, wheel bearings etc.
Did yours do it in any (forward) gear & neuatral & appear to be more noticeable cold & less noticeable warm?

Cheers obei:idea3:

I get a similar noise at low speed. Narrowed the noise down to the A/C compressor. The compressor whinning sounds OK with your head in the engine bay but does make noise when doing 40-60 K's.
If it gets any worse I'll see what Hold-on warranty say...
Maybe yours is the same noise on the V6?

My previous Series 1 also made the same noise between 50 to 60km/hr and with a slight load on the car. I had Holden look at it to which they had no clue (not that i'm surprised there) however i also had the problem with a Ford many years ago. Turned out to be a planetary gear set in the transmission. A big job to fix, probably why Holden declines to acknowledge the fault.

The aircon cabin blower fan works on Pulse Width Modulation, which makes it hit a certain harmonic at that speed.
On Auto setting you have three speeds to maintain the temp, play with that higher or lower to get rid of the apparent whine coming from front left of gearbox (main HVAC fan location).

My 06 SS does the same thing, but it appears to be coming from the trans. But it has 150k on it and i'm not kind to it. I haven't really checked what gear it's in, but it's at the same speed, around 50kph.
