Just had this problem come up on my VE 6lt. Kind Holden dealer did diag and advised it was the temp sensor all no charge as I was a long way from home. Reset it and it was all ok, but next day did it again. Took it to my Ultra Tune guy who replaced the sensor and it all ok again TIL next morning when I noticed that the temp gauge wasn't registering again and a few minutes later CONTACT DEALER came on again. Also interesting that I had noted air not working so had asked Ultra Tune to check it when servicing and fixing the other problem. Should I have them check the thermostats? Could this be the issue? Car is running well but it's bloody annoying. It's going back to Ultra Tune in the morning, but I'm sure they will just reset it and it will happen again. If it's not the sensor what else could it be? The ECU?

If it was the ECU everything else would be playing up so i doubt it. Its most likely your thermostat which you can buy for $50

thermostat is not electrically connected to thermostat in any way shape or form, is it visibly over hot, but you say it drives fine if it is not reading on the dash then look at the connection and also see if they have put any type of sealer on the thread of the new temp sender, you may not be getting a return path signal,

Well i had the exact same symptoms, changed the temp sensor nothing.. mechanics and auto elecs said it was going to cost me thousands going through the wiring/ecu and in the end it was the thermostat. Puts the car into some kind of saftey mode

Gday just following up on this. My 08 ve ssv is doing the same thing. Started last week. First it was the contact dealer message with the aircon and coolant temperature not working and also temperature going from normal running temp 80-90 down to -40 and when this happens the rpm goes up and down like up to 3000rpm when temp is reading -40. I replaced both the temp sensor and thermostat yesterday amd was running good until today and contact dealer came back on and no aircon/temperature reading...any other ideas what could be happening? Maybe i need disconnect the battery and do a computer restart...

I haven't got a scan tool or taken it anywhere to get looked at. I disconnected the battery for an hr to reset ecu and wipe the engine light. It hasnt played up since. So who knows what the go was. If it does it again ill buy a obd2 and get codes. Not wasting money taking it to a mechanic unless it necessary

just come across this thread.Did you fix your problem?Ive had the same problem for a few years now on my VE 6ltr Calais. It happens intermittently and had a break of about 9 months before it happened again. It happens more so in the colder months.I purchased a obd2 scan tool.It shows the code P0128(Coolant Temp below thermostat regulating temp).Yesterday it happened again and i cleared the code on the run and the temp gauge and air con immediately started operating but the temp gauge was very low and then after a while increased to normal temp.

Almost certain you will find it’s the thermostat. Mine was replaced and the problem came back but it turned out to be a problem caused by a replacement radiator (not OEM apparently) which was shedding parts that were blocking the thermostat from operating properly. Once the secondary problem was fixed they replaced the original thermostat and all was fine. During the issue though the a/c stopped as well as receiving all the warnings, and sometimes it would reset itself, but after a short while it would return. Everytime the mechanic cleared the offending pieces, which he thought were left there by the previous repairer it would run fine then bang another bit would come loose and block the thermostat. Your problem may not be the same issue with metal floaters in the radiator, but sounds to me exactly like a thermostat problem which is affecting the alert system and the a/c is automatically stopped by the computer in case of overheating or the like, even though it has nothing to do with the problem. Good luck.
P.s. when my mechanic went to talk to a radiator specialist to see what the problem might be he walked in with the metal bits and before even asking the guy said radiator 6lt VE Holden as he knew these non original radiators dropped bits out of the bottom tank that blocked the thermostat. Couldn’t go back and complain as previous repairer had closed shop.....now know why.
