not sure, things evolved from standard build to stroked 350ci engine build, forged pistons will sit at 10.3:1, H-beam rods:, HR 0.597" lift, with 107 lobe separation, VN #0019 heads, and valve gear to support Hyd roller, block work and oil galleries done, 8 litre sump, oil pan vacuum pump, 3000 stall convertor, transmission still thinking, T700, however would like to throw a 6 speed 6L80 into it, 3.9 gears on Limited slip. I have a twin forward 70mm throttle body manifold there and have few sets of different size bosch injectors
Still thinking about what to do with ecu
what ever comes up, I'm okay with that, as long as there is enough on tap to get out of its way when needed, I plan on driving it, as its been parked for too many years, however for now we still sometime off
It'll make 450hp at the engine.

I would say beef up the 4l60e. It is easier wiring/tuning/fitting obviously, and people have them behind 9/10/11 second combos so no reason it wouldn't work, unless you specifically wanted extra gears, but they are good enough for street cruising.

4L60, 4l60E, 6L80E comparison

I suppose its easier to stay with current 4L60 trans and rebuild at least know what starting with, or bounce to the 4L60E, if you want the electronic shift
started collecting parts for transmission, torque convertor, deep sump, driveshaft finished etc.

Oh yes, forgot that yours is th700.
Maybe 97ish 4l60e, VS ECU with wiring, and change the distributor plug on loom.
Then you can really customise shifting etc.

I really like the idea of the 6l80 or the 6l80e. certainly is a great gearbox though the cost could prove to be prohibitive.

VE VF 6speed auto is a big box i believe the tunnel has to be manipulated for it to all fit properly in earlier models
The guy that put a 6L80 into his vs l read about years ago, said it fits. Had to hit the tunnel with the mash hammer where the shifter is Give the shifter a bit of clearance.

The physical difference between a 4L60E & 6L80 is the 6L80 is physiclly taller.

Here is a pic another member posted on his swap which was a lsa 6l90 into his vz crewman.
He didn't use the supercharger, went na, & went turbo with l think 7 lb of boost.

I went looking for his thread, which is on jc. But some of the pics no longer exist.
I had this pic on my pc.

may need to get someone local who knows transmissions
so the main advantage moving from hydraulic to electronic is shift control, wonder how it all works with 2700-3000 rpm convertor?
I still like the idea of 6 speeds, as driving the VF/ 6 litre now and it gets the car moving
although I have 3.9 gears in diff, so that 1st gear maybe too low

Stay away from the vf 6l80 if you go down that track. Can't be made to work (it can, got change the tcm to earlier model) with the 2650 tcm. You need this to make it all work. Thats how l got my 6L50 to work behind my ecotec.

If you go down this track use the early ve 6L80 trans.

Here is a link to the pcs 2650 aftermarket tcu (I'll call it a tcu, so as not to confuse people).

lex yes great stuff
need to have a think about:
  • 4 or 6 gears
  • electronic or hydraulic shifting benefits
  • whether changing the box will upset a few people if I unload the Aero a little further down the track

Its past stock.

Where does it end?
I think once the mods start, it never ends, because you get to thinking "what if?" ;) :)

Just realised we are talking vn. Not vr - vs.
