These ecotec V6 engines are at least 30 years old or more in their design, and can use some oil between services if new thinner type oils are used in them. A lot of the newer oils on the market with the lower last number in their rating, (eg- 5W-30 or 10W-30 etc) are mostly made for use in newer overhead cam and/or multi valved type engines, as these engines need a faster flowing thinner oil.
The VT to VZ V6/V8 workshop manual says that for the ecotec and 5 litre V8 engine, the oil used should be a 20W-50 grade when the vehicle is operated in normal temps, or a 15W-40 grade in colder temps. It says that the alloy type V6 and the alloy V8 engines should use a 5W-30 or a 10W-30 grade oil.
