I have repaired a fair few over the years,
VT - VY (Bosch) alternators has a separate Regulator (RE72) secured with 2 Phillips head screws.
VZ alternators has an integrated regulator,
It can be replaced, but need the right tools,
whereas I replaced the bearings and brushes on mine, and it’s charging correctly.
VE alternators (Mitsubishi Alternators) have an integrated regulator, it can be preplaced, but need the right tools,
I also replaced the bearings and brushes,
Some of these original alternators had over-run clutches integrated into the front pulley, and over time fail, the clutch spring fails,
[they rust out, due to the locations being mounted so low], so the rotor doesn’t spin the correct speed to produce the correct charge rate/output.
There are 2 options for this,
Replace the bearings and brushes, and purchase a separate over-run pulley,
Or
source a standard alternator pulley,
Depending on your funds and time,
It’s almost the same to purchase a reconditioned unit from an auto electrician,
or purchase one from eBay.
I opted to repair all of mine, as I have tools and bearing press.
I purchase the Bearing from eBay,
And I have one seller I get my brushes from.
NB: If anyone needs the Bearing Part #'s, I have made a list for the alternators I have rebuilt, so you can order the correct parts.
