8.5 would be easier and cheaper but wont fill the guards as nice

Thanks mate. And I'm assuming the guards have to be rolled and modified to fit 20x10's?

Any idea what offset is ideal if going for the 20x10's? Anyone?

Talk to the shop about offset and you may find those wheels or something like that in 9.5s as thats a standard width for that car

above is what i have on my VE the only thing i was told is that you cant use your spare on rear if flat due to spare being 18x8.5 as it will make it 8.5 on one side and 9.5 on the other and can risk blowing the diff. not to sure how true this is someone here will correct me no doubt if wrong but 20x8.5 and 20x9.5 fills the guards so much better than standard width

How could having a WIDER tyre risk blowing the diff??? does not make any sense at all... if it was rolling diameter say a 245x40x20 on one side and a 245x40x17 on the other that could cause some issues..

That is what I was talking about having a 18x8.5 running a 245 45 18 one side and a 20x9.5 running a 275 30 20 on the other side

The two have the same rolling diameter and the only difference is weight which is minor.

10s will require guard rolls and I would check willtheyfit.com for offsets. Personally with that choice I'd go the 20x8.5s all round. 35P offsets will sit nicely in the guards just like the HSVs anyway. It'll still be good as supersports aren't staggered anyway

Those wheels you posted are MHT Niche GT. They only come in limited offsets with the 5 x 120 stud pattern of the VE Commodore.
http://mhtwheels.com/cms_pdf/M133 GT.pdf

The highest offset you can get in the 20 x 10 wheel in PCD 5 x 120 is +35mm. With a 10 inch rim and that offset the edge of the wheel will sit virtually in line with the face of your rear guards. Hence with a 275 wide tyre fitted you will need to roll the rear guard lips right up for the tyres to clear.

The 8.5 inch wheel is also +35mm offset but you will not have clearance issues with those rims and 245 or 255 width tyres fitted.

The 10 inch wheel in the Niche GT is quite dished but bear in mind that the 8.5 inch design has very little - if any - dish to it. The 8.5 wheels are quite flat.

As you can see on these shots it is quite a nice wheel on a well lowered VE....(but neither of these cars are Calais)...............

If you want a 10 inch rear black spoked rim but do not want to have to roll your rear guards for tyre clearance you might want to have a look at these wheels, sold here in Aust by various outlets, from the Italian wheel company Zumbo. This is the VEIGE design .

I understand the 20 x 10 inch rim for the REAR is available in a +50 mm offset and, with 275 wide tyres fitted, the tyre should clear the rear guards without an need to roll the guard lips.

(You will find that many manufacturers selling one piece cast 20 x 10 inch wheels in the 5 x 120 stud pattern do not have these wheels available in offsets larger than +38 mm offset).

grow a set you blokes jesus.

20 x 10 +35 will fit no problem, everyone is so pessimistic with wheel fitment in the commodore community for some reason. Like I said on LS1, 265/30/20 and you are golden, will still have a good 6mm before you touch the guard, remembering all tyre brands have different widths too.

For reference sake, this is what you are up against visually and to the millimeter, top setup (green) is what I'm running up back currently, below (orange) is the proposed Niche's on 265's.

Take note the poke, 3.7mm difference, I'm still 2.5mm from the guards, so there is no issue, Inset is no issue on these cars unless you go 11 inches or wider.

Roll guards (properly) Dremel the bumper tab and file smooth and you are on your way. If you are still unsure, you can mill several mm from the mounting pad, there is HEAPS of meat on these wheels to skim off.

Just remember not everyone wants rolled guards and the Stanced look. For a wheel beginner (as stated in the original post) I'd just buy the 20x8.5 35P wheels but on my owner car I'm more agressive.

20x9.5 20P with rolled guards for reference, with 1.5 degrees of camber too (max positive camber for SSSL and stock adjustment)
