The L98 might not have the same power as an LS2 but that was to do with the tune and the L98 being able to run on 91 petrol whereas the LS2 needed higher octane. When tuned the L98 put out 10 rwkw more than the LS2 with the same tune. They put it down to the L98 having better cylinder heads.

Ok, I didn't know that. Someone on here told me the LS2 will blow an L98. I have about 325rwkw, with Crow cam, OTR, 3" and headers.

Mine goes hard if you stomp on the go pedal. And it's enough to scare a passenger. But it no longer blows my mind, which is why I was saying you get used of it pretty quick. I guess I was under the impression that an LS2 would pull hard even with pretty light pedal? Whereas mine you need to give it a decent bit of stick to make it go well. Doing that though you can watch the gauge go down, at the rate of probably 30L every hour, hahahaha.

Anyway, been watching a few YouTube before and after videos about modified VE SS (still naturally aspirated) and they have heaps of power. Put it this way, they are still tractible and streetable when driven normally, but you can more than easily spin your way to 100kmh+ and land yourself in HEAPS of trouble, even on a dry 40 degree day. They are no slug when setup properly.

I do recall reading somewhere that both the L98 and the LS2 figures were fudged to make the LS2 look better. There is more than power to differentiate between a VE and an HSV but that 27 kw did look better.

I wouldn't mind test driving a VE like mine but without the cam, just to see how it feels with the same driving style I use most of the time.

I suspect basic bolt-ons and a tune would be enough in most cases for daily duties.

I have looked online and there are torque cams listed. I wonder if they would be better suited in a DD? I don't know enough about cams to understand how a torque cam works, where a cam like mine pushes the power further up the rev range.

I've also wondered if HRRs, if available would work at keeping bottom end, and even improve it somewhat, while still making some breathing improvements where it's needed mid - top?

I think you would definitely find the mods you mention would make for a better vehicle to drive and more economical. The ute I owned had 257 rwkw, with a manual it would be about 280. Though it was nana driving with a car club I was able to get into the 8's per litre, that however was all open road, no town.

Yeah on my trip to SA I was getting around 11, it was probably 650-680km to a tank maybe more. Over here I can burn through 11-12L in an 70-75km round trip.

L98, I don't think any of these were AFM.

Sitting on a constant 100-110kph with cruise makes a big difference. Over here my foot is up and down and changing gears pretty frequently. That makes my cammed V8 chew through the petrol. Tuned for 98 helps too. If I was tuned on 91 I wouldn't get those figures.
