Buying a VE, looking for some advice from those with the know-how

My advice, skip them all and buy something that isn't a VE, I know I'll get a bucketful of tears for that but my VE was the biggest pile of **** ever....and now it's someone elses problem. Anyway out of those 3 I would go for the series 2, low km and if the service history is up to date it...

    Trans lines popping off radiator

Yeah maybe it wasn't pushed in all the way, not sure. It seems to be shifting okay now that I have filled the trans with fluid but I did have to drive it home with only a couple of litres of fluid after it broke down and it was slipping so who knows whether I've done damage to it long term or...

    Trans lines popping off radiator

Yeah I was going to but I rang a few and they haven't got a clue either, one suggested that I get a special line made up from scratch with a threaded end and braise a fitting onto the radiator to screw it into...will cost an arm and a leg probably. My line and radiator are genuine Holden by the way.

    Trans lines popping off radiator

I'm having a problem with my VE V6 blowing the passenger side trans line off the radiator and want to see if anyone has had this happen or knows how to fix it. First it was leaking at the joint so we replaced the trans line itself but the leak persisted so next we replaced the radiator which...

    VE SV6 Buying Guide Help

Me too and I'm no mechanic but my understanding of the alloytec is if the timing chains don't get you, the motor will lunch itself due to sludge or you will have to tear it down anyway because of carbon issues. They don't seem to be an engine that will just keep going forever like an Ecotec. Of...

    VE SV6 Buying Guide Help

Well I wish you luck, my VE has 150k on the clock and so far the timing chains stretched, alternator and starter motor died, power steering pump needs replacing and now it's started pissing oil out of where the trans lines join the radiator which is hilariously only held in by a circlip and my...

Gumed up oil under rocket cover

Get some subaru upper engine cleaner part #sa459 or Threebond engine conditioner and spray it in the vac hose on the plenum while someone revs the car to about 2 grand otherwise it will stall. See here SIDI SV6 - cleaning intake manifold/valves - Street Commodores Online Forum

Hey mate the car is running great, the guys at Ultratune did a great job and were the cheapest I could find. Kmart salisbury wanted $4800 for the same job!

SS 2007 with 275000+ kms (What to look out for?)

I'd keep the SV6 if the chains are done, it should last a while but the SS will probably need a rebuild soon....I can't see it going much past 300k.

    Modern chinese tyres?

I'm running cheap chinese tyres, about 110 bucks each and they perform ok and seem to be lasting well. I haven't had any issues with traction either but I drive like nanna...or maybe the 3.6 doesn't have the horses to break traction lol

Purchasing a VE - What to look for?

As others said look for complete service history, if there's any gaps then walk away. The alloytec is prone to sludging. Also look for oil leaks from the timing chain cover, very common on cars with that mileage and a big job to fix. Then there's the dreaded timing chain itself, mine were...

    Engine rattle

More info needed mate. Where in the engine does the rattle sound to be coming from...front? Left or right bank etc? Does it only do it when first started? Any check engine warnings on the dash?

    Check Engine Code p0008

Suggest you shop around mate. Ultratune did my chains with a new waterpump for $1950

    MIL - Check Engine

My performance didn't change either but my chains were stretched and my car had approx 150 thousand km on the clock. I had the check engine come up on the dash and it was reset by the mechanic but came back a few weeks later too. Sorry man but my money is on the chains....hope I'm wrong though!

This item claims it will give 15% more power! (and up to 24% fuel economy savings)

Never heard of it before but it does sound like a massive flog tbh

Ve omega series 1 engine swap with series 2,timing chain issue..

Yeah if you swap engines you might just run into timing chain dramas 5 thousand Km later again, unless you can find an engine that has had the chains replaced (with receipts) I would be more inclined to fix yours and have the peace of mind that the job has been done.

    Yet another SV6 timing chain

I'd take it to an independent mechanic for a diagnosis but to answer your question timing chain faults are more common on earlier VE's until they revised the chains in 2007 but it still seems to be a fairly common issue on later years also. Also the car is more likely to go into limp mode and...

    Noisy power steer pump

Sorry for slow reply, car has been in crash repairers.....yeah the fluid does look a bit foamy. Guess the pump is stuffed then?

How to change the VE headlight globe

I found a really easy way to do the headlight globes on my VE, first I went to the fridge and got a cold beer then I sat on a milk crate and watched my mrs do it in less than 5 minutes. Her hands are tiny and mine are big. :)

    Noisy power steer pump

So the power steering pump in my VE makes a pretty loud whining sound, it is louder than the engine and pretty noticeable. The steering feels fine and it's not leaking and has been doing it since I bought the car about 4000km ago. Is it about to fail or is just a case of **** happens? I had a...

    VE omega cop car

Here in SA the bacon brigade use V6 omegas for all their general duties work which means they've been thrashed and trashed their whole life.....I wouldn't touch one personally.

    SV6 2006 VE a good first car?

Mate it will sound like a wet fart. I haven't heard a nice sounding exhaust modded V6 yet. Also I can see many defects in your future.

    SV6 2006 VE a good first car?

A VY is a great choice, their engines are near bulletproof.

    SV6 2006 VE a good first car?

If you buy a 2006 model make sure you have a spare couple of grand to do the timing chains, most 2006 models have upwards of 140k on the clock by now and are due to **** their chains....unless it's been done already and they have the receipts. Also make sure the service history is perfect...if...

    Is an sv6 fast?

Well maybe I'm just getting old but IMO 195kw is nothing to laugh at, sure it's no tyre shredding monster but it's more than enough to get you into a shitload of trouble and is more power than the old 5 litre makes. Also I like how the SV6 looks, with the bodykit etc.

    VE 2006 Calais startup faults

It could be stretched timing chains, next time it gives a check engine warning on the dash take it to an independent mechanic and get it scanned, actually I think even supercheap does scanning nowadays too.

The Super Duper Timing Chain Thread!

Just had my chains and tensioners done at Ultratune Salisbury for $1950 with a new water pump, I got about a dozen quotes and they ranged from 1950 all the way up to 4500 so it pays to shop around. Hopefully that helps some Adelaide people out too.

  31. A

Thinking of upgrading to a VE.

VE's are a great car to drive but watch out for timing chain fault codes and rattles as well as timing cover oil leaks. Also a couple of piss easy jobs on the Ecotec are a bitch on the 3.6 like the thermostat and spark plugs.
  32. A

Ve commodore stretched timing chain repair cost??

Try your local ultratune mate, I priced a few places out and got quotes from 1950 to 3500 but Ultratune will do mine for 1750 including a new waterpump.

    Changing VE/VZ spark plugs?

So if you're not splitting the manifold and lifting it as one piece that bugger of a bolt at the back doesn't need to be undone right? Also I only have 4 bolts on the top of my manifold (not counting the front left one that stays put) not 8 as Ricey said...bit confused and could use some help.

    Check engine warning Gremlin!

All I can think of is a faulty coil or maybe a fuel starvation problem considering it only does it on long hills. Sorry i can't be much help man. My mech reckons VE's are prone to odd electrical gremlins at times.
  35. A

    Check engine warning Gremlin!

I get the check engine warning come up on the dash every now and then when starting the car, had it scanned and diagnosed as a misfire also. I don't seem to lose any power though. It's been suggested by the mechanic that I change the spark plugs so I guess I'll start there.

    VE or VY

I just sold my VY and bought a 2006 VE and am happy with the decision. The VE is much nicer to drive, quieter in the cabin and just feels more modern and refined in general. As others have said perfect service history is a must with the VE, if there's a gap in the book then walk away no matter...

Need help with rattling cluster surround

Yeah I tried tape, some folded up paper and a bit of foam but nothing works. I *think* there should be a piece of plastic there to anchor the cluster but I need to know what it looks like so I can try and replicate it.

Need help with rattling cluster surround

So my cluster surround squeaks, vibrates and drives me nuts. I've pulled it out and there looks to be a place where something has broken off, maybe a clip. I've attached a pic with the area in question so I was hoping someone could tell me what should be there or maybe post a comparison pic please.
