With the sump off, you should be able to use a straight edge to check if the rear plate is sitting level and true? I did read somewhere that the thing that causes issues in tightening up those two (very) long bolts holding the sump and pulling the rear plate out of alignment. I‘m not fully...

@HSV-Paul , I had a thought… if you are going to be removing the sump, you could use one of those proper alignment tools for aligning the rear main seal plate. Something like one of these (I’m not particularly recommending this particular one)…...

I reckon it takes a certain type of person and personality to be a good police officer. They ideally want people who can walk in to a heated situation and cool it down. So, natural diplomacy/peacemaking attitude over a gung-ho do-as-I-say-or-else attitude. I suspect that there is a bit of irony...

You are barking up the wrong tree. It’s not a Crow Cam, and it’s not a tyre. If you read to codes in the cam, you can see ‘3206‘ quite clearly. And if you scan the matrix code with a DataMatrix code (use an app or do it manually) it’ll give you 33323936 in hexadecimal. Look up a standard ASCII...

Have you actually read the datamatrix code, and have you looked up the gm part numbers? And if so, post them up. I have checked both and posted my findings. If you want to believe that the ‘3206’ is a date code, then go for it. :)

I used ‘Code Scan’ (on an iPad, my old iPhone’s older OS doesn’t support it!). Don’t ask how I found the full gm part number for the cam! It was purely a ‘guess the first four digits‘ exercise! It’s definitely been an interesting and educational time following along with Paul’s fine work on...

The matrix thingo is a ‘DataMatrix’ code. It reads ‘3206’ (or hexadecimal 33323036).

I look at it is a little bit differently. The person in those leadership positions has won that position and gone through the recruitment ‘hoops’. All the applicants or possible contenders would all have their own approaches to the same job. The company or agency has decided that the person...

    VF Calais Insurance

The OP needs to tread very carefully. It’s a bit unclear from the post if the mods have been done or are in the process of being done, or are plans. It’s also unclear if the existing insurance company has actual ‘cancelled the insurance policy’ or is ‘refusing insurance’ or is saying that they...

By the style of the markings, it does look like it‘s the OEM cam. The ‘3206’ will probably be the last four digits of the gm part number. I saw someone selling a similarly marked cam on eBay (us) and they said it was a stock cam out of a LS.

From this distance, that looks like chemical damage. More specifically, it is oil (from a leak?) on PVC insulation. It somehow leaching out the plasticiser out of the insulation and the insulation becomes brittle and crumbles away. It will probably be confined to the ends of the wires (assuming...

I just checked… Ford Australia states… But I see that there is a separate company importing them and converting them (lhd to rhd). https://ausev.com.au/lightning/ The conversion process would partially explain the high price.

The last time I ran the calculations, the payments were about the same. Except at end of the lease I owned nothing (car = residual), whereas I‘be I took out a loan, I owned the car outright. I questioned the interest rate being used by the leasing company. They wouldn’t say as they said leasing...

Good call. If you remove the old plate, you’ll should have pretty good access to give the circumference of the crank a good clean. The present new seal might be sitting in a slightly different position to the original seal and it might running on some old buildup on the crank causing it to leak...

I wonder if that ‘new car smell’ is the smell of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)? If so, they wouldn’t be able to legally sell it.

Yep, many just don’t care. To go a little further, I used wonder why people took up novated leases as I found the savings fairly minimal, but the commitment pretty high. My old boss (a very wise fellow) pointed out one big advantage of leasing - all you have to do is pick a car, and sign a...

I’m not sure if I’m following where the oil is leaking from? Is it the sump-to-block area that’s leaking? On a separate note, I would be giving the end of the crankshaft a really good clean. Any dirt or build up (it looks a bit like Loctite?) will cause the flex plate not to sit true on the...

Depreciation is probably a major issue, but it is probably been driven by (a) unknown, or uncertain, depreciation with secondhand EVs, and (b) the equivalent new EV has reduced in price (and so reducing the prices of used examples further). The secondhand EV market will probably pick up in the...

It’s quite a long video considering he doesn’t actually install the transmission. However, I did like his suggestion of jacking the transmission up on a plank and progressively adding chocks at each side of the car. I also liked his suggestion of the ‘studs’ to help with the alignment. But I...

From my recollection, the hybrid Camry actually uses the same drivetrain as the Prius, so it’s the same mechanicals and electrics but on a different body. I have pulled apart several Prius many times and have been modifying them at times. It’s hard to explain, but Toyota has done a truely...

And isn’t it the prevalence of ‘cheap Chinese EVs’ that is knocking the stuffings out of Tesla? As much as people like (or dislike) Tesla, they are pragmatically buying Chinese instead as they offer better value for money.

Isn’t the fuel level a CAN bus message? If the gauge is going ‘way below the line’, it’s probably an issue with the gauge itself (probably the needle isn‘t in the correct spot). Check what your gauge does at start up. If it’s like the VF, the gauges should do a minimum-to-maximum sweep. If it’s...

I’m very impressed that you can work it all out in your head. I can’t, so I use pen-and-paper, a calculator, or a spreadsheet. The numbers don’t always come out how I imagine. Sometimes there isn’t much in the figures (such as buying a battery) and sometimes there are significant differences...

With respect, you are being very closed minded (did you say that you actually went to university?). Do you really believe that people with EVs can’t go on holidays, or can’t travel long distances, or can’t tow? It’s interesting how you keep coming up with outlier arguments (such as need to drive...

Both can absolutely be a second vehicle, but for some reason Losh can’t possibly make an EV work (because apparently it’s only good for going to and fro work, and not much else) whereas a motorbike is just fine and dandy (and makes perfect economic sense). Go figure! :)

That’s fair enough. I tend to run numbers on my household costs (yep, I have an excel spreadsheet!). I run scenarios from time to time planning out where my next bang-for-bucks spend lies. As part of that I run the idea of installing a battery. So far, I just haven’t been able to make the...

You don’t have to justify your expenditure to us. But, out of interest, let us know when your savings (motorbike vs ute) exceed your costs (of buying, running, and ‘maintaining‘) the bike. Is that a serious question or a rhetorical question? If it is a serious question, let me run the numbers for you (I love numbers!). I’ll base these on Australia, and Melbourne, but you can adjust them to your own area. The average mileage for a car in Australia is 13,272 km per year. EVs...

  38. C

    Things that p*** you off/bug you/annoy you

Yep, it seems to be an aberration. We have to declare our bank interest, but not our PV earnings. As far as I can tell, the ATO does know about it and their view at the moment is to let it slide. I did read somewhere that if the primary purpose is income (rather than just saving on your energy...

  40. C

    Things that p*** you off/bug you/annoy you

That‘s a valid point. But there is also to idea that EVs can be used to ‘soak up’ the excess PV generation during the day, so it actually helps the infrastructure - that energy goes in to your own car instead for passing it on to the grid. (Which is why there are those negative-price tariffs...
