Really need a "dislike" button on here.

Anyway, Alpine Type R is OK but you can get nicer sounding speakers for the same money.

I can vouch for the Alpine Type R splits. They are very loud and sound very nice, however. I believe Vibe audio is the way to go for speakers. My friend has a set of vibe slick splits ($120 from autobarn) (on a option audio a/b amp) and they sound just as nice and go just as loud as my Type R's ($300 from st marys car audio) (on a fusion a/b amp).

My other friend has a rodeo ute single cab with Vibe black airs and they sound amazing (on a sound stream a/b amp). The clarity is off it head. They sound way better then the type R's.

The next speakers I'm getting for the fronts are Vibe Space splits (high end vibe gear).

$5,700 for a type-r system? I hope this includes installation and I'm guessing was from BASS up there in Ballarat?

Anyway, for $5k you can do a hell of a lot better than Alpine Type-R. Depends on your willingness to self install, but if you're unsure hit up your closest car audio specialist with a final figure and an idea of what you would like. You're better off dropping big dollars on your deck, splits and subs than wasting money on rear doors, 6x9s and dual sub setups. One quality sub > two midrange subs.

I'm no expert on what are considered good or bad brands, but Polk, Morel and Focal would be my starting points for 'superior' sound.

I have spent about $1500 on my audio setup. I bought all the bits 2nd hand of different internet sites. I got Alpine type r 6.5" splits in front doors (bought brand new for $160 of this site), Alpine Type r 6x9's in the rear (bought 3 months old off this site for $130), Kenwood 7" touch screen DVD single din (Paid $450 off boost loosing), Alpine MRP-F600 running speakers (Paid $225 off boost), Alpine MRP-M850 running 2 Alpine Type s 12" subs (Paid $250 offm my mate for subs and amp). Then all the amp wiring which cost around $250. I installed all my self. I am very happy with the sound. I didnt want it in your face bass or anything, just a nice clear quality sound. That is what i achieved

Yeah. Pretty much.
I installed it. All brought from jb with warranty.
DVD head unit - $1600
2x 1000rms alpine amps - $600 each
2x type R Subs in box. $450 each
2x type R splits - $250 each
Type R 6x9s - $250? I think.
2x 300rms 4 channel amps. $250 each.
And then some piss weak cap that didn't work and they rest on wiring and RCA's.
Adds up quick. Defiantly could of done something more extreme.
But I'm happy with it.

Alright, scrap all the stupid Alpine suggestions.

5 THOUSAND DOLLARS IS WELL AND TRULY WHERE THE SERIOUS BOYS COME IN, LEAVE YOUR ALPINE CRAP AT HOME.

Brands including (but not limited to): Morel, Crescendo, VIBE, Audison, Rainbow, Image Dynamics, Focal, DynAudio, DLS and so on are much better starting points, brands where you pay for quality products as opposed to the badge on it.

The main thing we need to know in order to budget this for you is what sort of a headunit you are wanting. If you want a standard run-of-the-mill headunit then your looking at max $500. If you want a touchscreen, DVD, navigation and so on setup, then you're looking at $1500+. As you can see, this will have a large effect on the budget left for other components.

So what I'm really saying is have a look around for a headunit you like and then report back to us with the model number and price of it. That way we can work out speakers, subs, amp, installation costs (wood for box, wiring, sound deadener etc.) at a later point when we are aware of what remains of the budget.

Popular headunit brands include: Pioneer, Alpine, JVC, Kenwood and Clarion.

As long as you are aware of the pros/cons of ordering from the US then that is fine. Problems you may encounter: DVD region may be set to the US, making any Australian Region 4 DVDs useless. FM radio increments may be different and you may not be able to get some channels etc.

Are you saying you want 4 sets of front speakers? Also, don't worry about 6x9s, just get 6 inch coaxials for the rear fill.
Great choice on the subwoofer, it's highly regarded.

Are you doing the installation? With all these expensive components the installation techniques need to be top notch to get the most out of the parts. Also, be sure to include sound deadening in your budget. Roughly $220 for a bulk pack of dynamat will do just fine.

Mono for sub, 4/2 channel for speakers is what you do. How is your budget looking for amplifiers?
