Here’s what is behind it in more detail than you might be wondering.

On the left is the rectangle shaped inlet for cabin air. Essentially the hole you are enquiring about.

With the recirc door open.

On the left is that part of the HVAC. Missing is the fan motor.

Same bit from the angle you would see if looking from an invisible engine bay.

Same angle view as if the firewall was invisible.

What a very kind and considerate fellow you are! Taking your car apart and taking photos to show a total stranger what’s in it!

The actuator is accessed via the interior. Don’t jump the gun on it yet.

You don’t want to know how big a job that turned into, let’s just say I have an extremely intimate knowledge of where water can come in.

Had to do some research as I don't have the stock HVAC controls (I have an Alpine H/U with steering wheel controls and HVAC integration). Must say that the Alpine version of HVAC controls is far from good. ANYWAY... I'm not sure that the Alpine has a 'pollution mode'. I clearly remember this control with the stock H/U. Pretty sure the AerPro integrations do have so that's a sh%t. I still have to check this so I can't say for sure right now. But i've tried all sorts of combinations on recirc/non-recirc. I really, really don't want to jump the gun yet but am a little worried its come lose from the actuator (if coming lose is actually possible). Not sure what to do other than wait until I can contact H/U installer and ask re pollution control etc.

I'll wait,... but how would i go about checking this from the interior? If it makes you feel any better I have to check that side anyway as think there's a leak there too. Grrrr

Gonna take it for a quick drive.

Thanks for the help so far.

The glove box out. Some of the panels from the trans tunnel passenger side off.
Remove the fan motor.
Then you’ll have a good idea of what’s going on in there. Again, a good scan tool would be able to operate the various settings to test them.

I think a few members here will have experience with the recirc door being fixed with it in the car.
