for the last say 80 plus years a screw driver was the mechanics stethoscope but yes if you are the type of person that cant workout there are dangerous moving parts while an engine is running and you dont take the proper precautions while inspecting it you should not really be working on it and you should leave it to someone that knows how to work on machinery.

my stethoscope is 50cm long and has served me well over the years to diagnose engine noises and open paint cans :D
All true but many basic tinkerer types probably won’t have a 1/2 meter screw driver and, being that Michele has only two posts, I’d guess she is likely not mechanically minded. As such I felt it prudent to post a heads up... which is why i said “so just a heads up”.

At tech school (a lifetime ago) some had scalped themselves after being told to wear hair nets and why they should wear hair nets around spinning machinery but some young dumb adults knew better... So my post was a ‘better safe than sorry’ heads up and not a criticism of a skilled mechanic’s safety knowledge... because I’d hate to hear Michele scalped herself.

Did your Tech school have a poster in the machine shop of someone's left index finger with a 3/16" drill bit through it?

No, we had amougst others, a poster of a hand on a table with a ring laying further up the table and the ripped off finger laying above that. Message was not to wear jewelry (rings, necklaces, wrist wtches, etc) around spining/moving machinery  This one and one of a half scalped guy stuck with me...

Wear safety glasses with spinning machinery people.

Thanks everyone for your replies & don't worry I won't be doing anything I have a couple of older family members going to try and fix it for me and they normally work on trucks so they just wanted me to get some opinions and they were saying a lot of the same as you guys so thank you
