1997 VT Executive 5 Speed Manual
Hi all, I've done searches both on this site and Google and can't seem to find an answer to my particular problem.

I have a VT with a Getrag 5 speed box in it. Problem: it makes a ticking noise while driving. ONLY when driving. It starts at around 40km/h regardless of gear and will progressively get louder and faster as I speed up. Anyone have an idea on what this could be?

I don't wanna pay the tranny dude $1800 to do a rebuild if I can do the repairs myself; OR if I can tell him to only replace whats making this noise.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks fella's. Do these donuts have a technical name? I'd hate to walk into a parts supplier and ask for a donut....I'd feel a little bit silly :D

sorta sounds like a headers/extractor leak? they normally make a ticking sorta chugging noise when they are leaking a fair bit.

@jacob112: if it were a header leak, I imagine id be able to hear the same ticking noise when revving in neutral yes? Either way I'll check all the bolts on the headers and make sure they're tight.
@EVY: any idea how costly a chipped/broken gear would be to replace?

R.e. The exhaust leak, if it's not that bad you only really hear it when the engines under a bit of load.

A damaged gear was only a guess. Just a strange symptom, that's all.

Have you had a look underneath? Might be as simple as something rubbing on the vss wheel. Could also be the tailshaft centre bearing.
