- '94 Holden Calais VR V8
I was looking through my 'Street Commodore' magazines trying to get an idea of what Id like to do to my car. I thought Id post it up here to share for people who maybe would like to use it as a starting ground on their new project.
It gives you an Outline of Engine Combination's with Price Ranges and approx. Power Gains.
This was illustrated in Street Commodores 'Power Special' Issue 174
FORCED INDUCTION
"We've listed a number of forced induction combo's in the injected Holden list, but Matthew Ellers awesome VH SL/E deserved a mention for its innovation and stealth power. It used a VS 304ci 5L with some choice of fuel system upgrades and a hidden turbo up the back. What could be easier? Replicate it yourself with a healthy existing EFI V8 for even cheaper."
Price Range: Under $5000
Block: 304ci Holden
Rotating ASSY: Stock
Compression: Stock
Intake: Stock manifold, rear - mounted turbo on low boost
Heads/Valvetrain: Stock
Expected Power: Approx. 350fwhp (261 kW)
Value For Money: 4/5
Streetability: 5/5
Street Cred: 2/5
N/A STOCK CUBE
"This one is for the hardcore guys with a point to prove. If you want to follow the path of people like Jodi Racco, you'll need to spend plenty of time on the block preparation, parts selection and have the desire to run exotic fuels. But it can be done - Jodi's VN was running high-9sec passes at the time we featured it. Probably not the best choice for your daily, though."
Price Range: $10,000+
Block: 304ci Holden
Rotating ASSY: Crankshaft Rebuilders 4340 forged crank, forged rods, forged high-comp pistons
Compression: 13:1+
Intake: Harrop single plane manifold, 750cfm carb', spacer plate
Heads/Valvetrain: Ported VN heads, huge sold cam' (0.650in+ lift)
Expected Power: Approx. 550fwhp (410kW)
Value For Money: 3/5
Streetability: 3/5
Street Cred: 4/5
FORCED INDUCTION
"Nathan Robson's VS SS certainly made an impression on us when we say it at Summernats a couple of years ago. Making 867fwhp thanks to a T-trim Vortech, 355ci stroker kit and some gas; it's perhaps one of the most impressive and least complicated injected Holden V8s getting around right now. However, it would also be one of the most expensive to replicate."
Price Range:$10,000+
Block: 304ci Holden
Rotating ASSY: Harrop 3.48in stroker crank, Eagle 5.7in rods, forged ACL pistons
Compression: 10:1
Intake: COME twin throttle manifold, T-trim Vortech supercharger, intercooler, water/methanol injection
Heads/Valvetrain: Ported VN Heads
Expected Power: Approx. 650fwhp (484kW)
Value For Money: 4/5
Streetability: 4/5
Street Cred: 5/5
N/A STROKED
"There is a whide range of stroker kits available for the Holden V8; whether it's EFI or pre-EFI. a naturally-aspirated stroker, like Rod Murphy's VT from issue 162 represents a powerful, torquey and reliable combo for any street car. There's very little to go wrong if they've been bolted together correctly and sound mean through a large, short exhaust."
Price Range: $5000 - $9999
Block: 304ci
Rotating ASSY: COME 383ci Stroker Kit
Compression: 10.5:1
Intake: Stock manifold, ported throttle
Heads/Valvetrain: Ported factory heards, hydraulic roller cam' (0.500in+ lift)
Expected Power: Approx. 400fwhp (298kW)
Value For Money: 4/5
Streetability: 5/5
Street Cred: 3/5
N/A STOCK CUBE
"If you're after a nice boost in power but have limited funds (like most of us), there are a ton of mods you can make to your injected 5L without tearing the whole engine down. Port the heads, jam a new cam' through the guts and generally just get more air and fuel in there - it's hard to go wrong. Best still, if you can do any of yourself, you may even have some money left over from $5000."
Price Range: Under $5000
Block: 304ci Holden
Rotating ASSY: Stock
Compression: 10.5:1+
Intake: Ported throttle, CAI
Heads/Valvetrain: Ported heads, higher-ratio rockers, upgraded valve springs, hydraulic cam' (0.450in+ lift)
Expected Power: Approx. 300fwhp (223kW)
Value For Money: 4/5
Streetability: 5/5
Street Cred: 3/5
FORCED INDUCTION
"Jeremy Martin's unassuming-looking VB sedan blew plenty of people away when we featured it in Issue 159. Boasting a simple-but-strong combination of parts and large turbo, it ran an astonishing 9.7sec pass with more left in the tank. It's a recipe that's screaming to be followed by more injected 5L owners and you could even achieve a similar result with more stock parts and a lower boost level on a smaller turbo."
Price Range: $5000-$9999
Block: 304ci Holden
Rotating ASSY: Scat stroker crank, H-Beam rods, forged pistons
Compression: Stock or low (8.5:1)
Intake: Single-plane, 80mm throttle with intake elbow, water/methanol injection, single turbo with factory-style reversed manifolds.
Heads/Valvetrain: Stock, upgraded valve springs
Expected Power: Approx. 500fwhp (373kW)
Value For Money: 5/5
Streetability: 4/5
Street Cred: 5/5
