why isn't your aftermarket stereo hooked up in the photos, only the steering wheel control wires? are u sure this works with any aftermarket stereo, i have a kenwood ? want to do this but need to know it works

what model HU and list wiring connections you do know may help
not heard the term key 1
maybe means ignition input

We tried a range of wires, with nothing working.

Seems the only way to do it is buy the adapter, which for $100 I am not keen on at this stage.

On our cheap Chinese stereo, the wiring guide showed three cables for the steering wheel controls. I think they were Key 1 +, Key 1 - and Earth or power (this was a couple of years ago).

Your guide may show different names. Just try all the steering control wires on the wires behind the cowling. You (probably) won't blow up anything as the car wires have very low voltages.
