In S1 only Redlines and HSV had the ball type. I never really understood why SS and SSV didn't?

I think most buyers of these are doing it for the sound increase as it would probably only be a marginal power increase all though the x pipe and the muffler delete over the standard system has got to help somewhat.
I think a bit of both, but the performance benefit of a correctly located x-pipe is mainly scavenging in the lower mid range. So technically the pressure waves are reflected back into cylinder to bounce out (scavenge) gasses to improve escape velocity (torque) mainly, also more even pulse separation reduces noise and promotes high RPM flow (HP).

My wagon had the ball front and the flat flange rear so I will have to look out for one of those.

So a gts mid section is 2.5" and a lsa r8/senator is 2.25"?
