30% off at Repco once or twice a year has had me stocking up on Castrol, Penrite and a fair whack of dex vi over the past 4 years. On topic, what's in lifter freeing additives that makes them possibly work? What's the disadvantages of use?

Don't know the chemical make up of them but the nulon stuff I bought was water thin and smelt a bit like kerosene so I'd say that it breaks down sludge and frees up the oil galleries of the lifter

mostly those additives just thin the oil so it can flow into smaller tolerance places encase thicker oil or gunk has built up making it harder to get in

They have a petroleum based alcohol cleaning agent. Yes it will thin the oil but the method to the madness isnt to just thin the oil or your just drop your weight... It's a cleaning agent and is designed to clean the plunger and cylinder areas where the oil pushes through to feed the cam or crank pending direction in oil circuit.

If it does it for a few seconds on start up I'd try oil flushing or an additive as it's the start of them gumming. Noisy lifters for a couple seconds may be popular but its not right. These cars run between 0 and 10 weight cold. It's thin as poo if it's not pumping up almost instantly in my opinion its a little blocked..

I buy my oil 20 litres at a time and grab filters when on special.

I decided to go with 5k changes mainly because of the poxy little filters Holden use. Ford ones are twice the size, go figure

If the filter worries you, you could change it at 5k and the oil at 10k

Would that be ok? Everyone else is saying to do 5k oil changes.

What engine are u talking about mate? If vr v6 like ur profile says I wouldn't be too stressed about 5k oil changes unless it's got a dirty big turbo strapped to it although ur not harming anything by doing it every 5k

Well you mentioned the small filters for the reason to change the oil at 5K.

I do 10K oil changes on the V6 but the missus does a lot of miles so 10K is easily done in less than 6 months.
