For a fraction of the cost put a flat disc rare earth magnet on your steel drain plug and have the best of both worlds ...

Got any failed hard disk drives laying around? They have great magnets in them.
Cut and grind to suit the end of the sump plug.

There was a youtube video where a chap used 4x HDD magnets and placed then around his oil filter. He drove around until next oil change where he removed the magnets and then cut the oil filter open so you could see metal caught by the magnets. So it sems like a good idea to have a magnetic plug.

To be honest, I was surprised to hear that LS3 doesn't have a magnetic sump plug considering GM put magnets in the bottom of the auto pan, so why no magnet in the engine sump plug?

It would be interesting to hear how @dans_vz got on with his magnetic plug and how much crap it catches between oil changes since presumably he's had 2 (actually closer to 1 1/2) years with it.
