Need to change the oil in the Astra and was wondering if magnatec would be ok? Or is it bad oil and need to get penrite and pay an extra 14 bucks?

It's fine. The frequency/regularity of changes is the most important thing.

Is it a high detergent oil like some other castrol products?

I ran ecotec and 4 ls1's on it no issues. Engines were nice and clean for cam swaps

Sounds like it might be ok for a quick oil and filter change. It needs a service but until we can afford that i thought i will give it an oil change so it can be used for a couple of months and not run dirty old oil through a good engine.

It'll be fine. I've used it in all sorts of cars for years.
Just make sure you use the correct grade as per your books......That's important.

No book in the car mech lost it. It needs a semi syn and im pretty sure magnatec is just that. Gonna use 10w 40 as that seems fairly common oil around 08 cars.

Oh dear me.......More "lost"books.
Simple to look up the correct oil for that vehicle on the Castrol site.
