Aside from the shape and look, the only similarity is the name.

And the central speedo.
Yes, the BMW is not really a mini (in size) as it’s so much bigger in every dimension than the original. And it‘s definitely a fail in terms of price positioning if the aim was to be mini like as the original mini was supposed to be cheap and cheerful.

Still, it’s an interesting modern interpretation… and some variants like the MiniCooper S MC40 as show just the other day on Wheeler Dealers (S14E16 or S15E3) seem to have real oomph.

Looks like cardboard on my small screen.

If so it's probably part of their recycling and environmental approach to car building along with bullshiting the public they are "clean"... :p:p:p

Yes, it is cardboard....like coreflute.

I suppose the air gaps may have some insulating capacity.

Better than nothing, like early Commodores got. Air pockets slow the transfer of heat and cold, bit like honey comb blinds on a house. Don't know what VE's have but I suspect it's the same as the 90s models, not much.

Style wise, the Mini that your son has is the best looking in my opinion... The newer ones look too blobby...

I see what I think is called a Countryman getting about on my way to work. It seems bigger than the early version of the new minis we see.
