The GTI was the second manual car i drove. and was a great experience. certainly well balanced in performance and handling. hard to find a good mk6 in good nick with quite a few of them going up to stage 3 and being thrashed about. but a good car over all. only been in one HSV which was a VY clubby manual. that was fun also. hard to choose. only V8 i have been in except for my mum's ZH (i think) big block Ford Fairlane

If you want a V8 and can afford a V8, get one. ( Even a Falcon V8. I had a 351 Fairlane for a while ….. it was big. )
I can't advise you which one, but at least it will satisfy your curiosity, and possibly cure your want of a 4 or 5 cylinder Euro money pit.

Buy whatever the hell you want, just make sure you are happy with the choice you make before you lay money down. Also take into account how much driving you do and where, you currently have a ute, will you be likely to need a ute etc in the future? Also Will $120 a week of fuel scare you off a V8 haha. Ultimately nothing wrong with any of your options, just be happy/comfortable with what you choose.

For example, my Maloo is my daily, its kind of practical being a ute, but with its height and payload it could be more practical for sure. But I bought it because that's what I wanted regardless of anything else or how useful it is. It's what I wanted and although it chews through fuel like a fat kid, I love it and I'll never sell it. That said though, it does leave me in the situation where I am now looking at buying another car (#5 lol) as I need something to tow the race car with and ideally something which I can pickup heavy engines with. I'm ok with this decision, but the point is be aware if your work/life/whatever situation may change and require you to have a specific car of some description. For me having an extra car isn't a big deal but not everyone is in the same situation.

i don't drive that much. maybe a little over 5'000 kms a year. roughly 100 ish a week. on a v6 with usually 15ltr or 14ltr per 100ks i survive around 3 weeks to a month before a refill. work is around 15 - 20 minutes away and i get a pay rise every year i work with these guys. as to whether 120 a week on fuel will scare me, not sure. i have always loved V8's. but i do also want to be smart and that is why i am asking around for other peoples thought on the subject. i know the decision will come down to me but i would like thoughts and opinions from people who have been there and know more then i would on this.

If that's all you're driving then the fuel of a V8 shouldn't scare you off then. I drive around 4-500ks per week, hence the figures quoted. Last week I filled up on Monday and Friday. For me the cost of fuel annoys me but I love the car enough it that it over rules it.

I posted these fuel consumption numbers in another thread a few weeks ago.....last ten tanks to that time.

Mix of suburban, peak hour and highway driving. I don't drive it like a Nana but don't thrash it either.....I suppose spirited driving.

Litres / Kms / Litres per 100kms
39.19 / 293.31 / 13.36
39.98 / 303.01 / 13.19
30.51 / 211.40 / 14.43
51.4 / 391.15 / 13.14
39.29 / 288.00 / 13.64
41.54 / 307.28 / 13.52
46.03 / 340.94 / 13.50
50.95 / 393.11 / 12.96
39.59 / 294.31 / 13.45
40.79 / 326.13 / 12.51

Avg litres p/100 kms 13.37.

When I refill and reset the Kms and litres per 100 km numbers, it will give me a range of high 400s to low 500s.
