Someone on the first page said the VL was capable of 217km/h an or something and had 117kw and a 'normal' diff. They had a top speed of 187km/h and they had 114kw and they had a 3.45 diff ratio which would also be to blame for the lowish top speed (as normal commodores have a 3:08). And the SV6 has a 2:87 diff ratio.

The SV6 would surely be capable of 230km/h? The 3.8litre Buick engines only fell just short and they're only a pushrod V6. A quad-cam, 24 valve V6 with 190kw and 335NM of torque should surely be capable of it?

Torque = Accelleration

Horsepower = Top speed

So 190k and tall diff should equate to a decent top speed

I don't know about that theory mate. Torque is the twisting force produced by the engine, and it gets hard to twist the wheels at high speed once there's a decent amount of wind resistance. But then just huge torque wont make you go fast either.

I've had a stock VLTurbo with factory FE2 and nothing else, with the speedo needle off the clock in 1988. From memory when the speedo needle got to the trip meter reset, that was 217km/h. They were good for over 220km/h.

A N/A 3.8 V6 VX/VY were good for 210km/h, so the SV6 ought to be good for 220. I can't see a stock one doing much more though.

depends on diff ratio , horsepower , air friction , downforce , gearing
road surface , incline , speedo error and balls ...its really only relevant to people for wanking (bragging) rights.Usually when Ive been racing round the track if Im going really fast I dont have time to look at the speedo
and as I always say if you have time to look at the speedo your not going fast enough....

have any of you guys ever suffered the "speedo power off" at 255klm in your vs gts / gtsr's ??
our s/c gtsr did at 255. that was cool explaining to holden. for the record no we never got an answer as to why?
Sorry forgot to mention when we slowed down the only way to get the speedo back was to "reboot"

Had a VR GTS, built prior to the 250kph speedos so it only went to 220 I think and yeah when it hit that speed it dropped to zero till you slowed to 220 then it bounced back up again. The digital speedo did the same thing.

Oh and the GTS managed 260kph worked out by revs, gear and diff ratio ;)

The VZ has possibly done 240 in 5th prob more in it wasnt prepared to find out.

PS I could be bullshitting and have never actually broken the speed limit.
