I think some of the cheap bluetooth ones will read most of the codes but I have no experience to say one over another. If you are looking at doing anything more than troubleshooting they may be OK and something cheap you can shove in the glove box.

I haven't come across one that is bi-directional.

If you are looking for the best scanner for the vehicle you can't go past a tech 2 clone for the basics. If you are going to need to link modules or code keys you need to step up into the bi directional market and that can get expensive real quick.

For an advance home mechanic I think the Vident/Topdon coupled with a mulitmeter will get you out of most predicaments.

If you are starting to more in depth electrical diagnostics an oscilloscope becomes a good friend too.

Good for reading codes and that's about it. If you're looking for one for your VS, the majority won't work as your VS is OBD1 aka ALDL, not OBD2.

I was not able to get the tech 2 (clone) to talk to the TIS2000 download using tech2win. Could get each side to communicate but not with each other. I tried using the ACDelco authorisation with Holden's assistance and nothing worked there either. Took it into Holden so they could authorise it using their software after purchasing a license too. That failed - probably recognised it as a clone.

I priced up a clone MIDI (being used successfully by others) but in the end opted to purchase a Vident scanner. So I use the Tech 2 for the detailed work and the Vident if I need to link something.

Lost hours of my life trying to work through it. Sometimes the juice just isn't worth the squeeze!

VT ii
might have to look into one

Hello, Jolls and Decksta!

Firstly, I have never used a Tech-2, nor can I afford one.

Secondly, I don't use Windows (for the software required for it).

Thirdly, I cannot afford to go down the pathway of trying a "clone",
simply because the long-term "unknowns" might make the final cost
prohibitive too.

So I am not able to "talk" about the Tech-2.

However, after excellent advice in this forum from Fu Manchu, I have
puchased and used the Vident i400AU on my VT.

Yes; it is "clunky" in the way it requires pressing buttons to get
into/around the sections to monitor sensors etc., but it DOES get
you into all parts of the vehicle.

Jolls, I realise that it would not be suitable for everyday use in
a business that works with various vehicle types, or for rapidity.
And at the present time my experience is with the "Engine" section
only (ie for monitor/maintenance purposes) but it does do a lot.

I am asking/interested only in finding out why YOU want the Tech-2
crack thing? Is it only to manage multiple vehicles? Vident does
have some kind of option for a multiple vehicle licence. In other
words, it might get the broad access you need/want, but maybe not
the "speediness" if it is for business (perhaps).

I reiterate, I have found the Vident to give good access to all the
sensors that I needed to check out.

Decksta, if you are looking for something to get you access to the
sensors and other things then the Vident i400AU (around $300+) - as
a minimum $ outlay - might get you what you need.

Given that I have never used the Tech-2, my knowledge of what you
can do with it is limited. Herein I am assuming you are repairing
or maintaining a vehicle. If so, then don't hesitate trying the
Vident.

Having said THAT, I agree with Fu Manchu that an oscilloscope, used
as an "accessory", is probably going to assist with a "finer" grain
view of the fluctuations in the ECU-controlled injection system (ie
injection-inputs-based-on-exhaust-outputs).

Originally I came to that conclusion too. So in that regard I had
also picked up a ZOYI ZT-702S HANDHELD oscilloscope/multimeter for
that purpose. HOWEVER, since it has just arrived, I now realise
that it is only a single input (on the oscilloscope), whereas two
inputs could be a much better setup. At the moment it is UNTESTED,
so I cannot give you conclusive advice about that. On paper it looks
fabulous. (However, I suppose the "unsinkable" Titanic looked fabulous
on paper too!)

Just trying to help with a bit of clarity about the Vident.

Regards,
boombaby

Reading through this if anyone buys a tech2 clone MDI or MDI2 and wants to know how to get TIS approval easily on tech2win just send me a message. I actually have a video on youtube showing it in action (link is below)
This is for the MDI & MDI2 clones or genuine not for rubbish like the VCX Nano tech.
Linking, keys, remotes everything can be done and you can also use the MDI & MDI2 on AcdelcoTDS SPS2 to reprogram/update modules if you purchase VIN access per vehicle which is $61 per VIN
