On my Scan Disk like the one above I have about 3,500 tracks scattered across 8 folders with one of those folders including another 9 folders and 99% of the time it comes up instantly and on the odd occasion it doesn't, it takes less than 5 seconds.

I have everything broken up into folders to facilitate our differing tastes as my wife likes only Classical where I tend to prefer something that makes my ears bleed or Country.

Yeah missus is into Whitney Houston, Snow Patrol, Madonna and it makes me physically ill listening to all the lovey dovey smut, where I'm listening to 60's and 70's rock like Zeppelin, Sabbath, Doors, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Bowie, to thrash like Metallica, Slayer, Kreator, Sepultura, Toxic Holocaust, to death metal like Carcass, Deicide, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, to black metal like Taake, Darkthrone, Burzum, Drudkh, Immortal, Gorgoroth, Naglfar, Marduk, but then I'll turn around and listen to QOTSA, Radiohead, Suicidal Tendencies, Tool, AC/DC, Alice in Chains, then doom metal and stoner rock like Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Weedeater, my music taste is bi-polar!

Oh so you can make different folders on the USB and they will still pop up on MyLink? If I knew that I wouldn't have gotten another stick, ha.

Yes the folders will show up in your menu and you can access your choice from there or it will move onto the next folder as the song list in is completed.

.. or set playback on 'shuttle'
then it picks random tracks (from among the thousand or so on the stick) and plays them

I'd like to be able to do this but I can only seem to get "shuffle" working for within a specific folder, not the root folder/files.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Black5, you have to go into the menu which offers the "Artists" or "Albums" or "Songs" choice.
Choose Songs, and then when you shuffle it'll shuffle between all songs.

I know that's the procedure you need to follow, but I'm not fully sure on the names of the options on the menu I'm talking about.

As what Forg said... if you've already gone into a folder to play songs and then you hit shuffle it will only shuffle in that folder.

You have to be playing all songs first.

Thanks guys,

Will give it a try :)

EDIT: Tested and worked perfectly as suggested. Thanks

In anticipation of buying a new car, I have been thinking of getting my music sorted for USB. I have Macbook and my music is on iTunes, and tracks are in .m4a format. Holden doesn't say it is supported so I tried to change extension to .mp3 but then iTunes wouldn't play the song!! Do I have a computer full of songs I can't play in either iTunes or from a USB in my car?? I am confused!!

Just changing the extension doesn't change the format ... that's like taking a Microsoft Word .docx file, changing the extension to .txt, and expecting to see it in a plain-text viewer like Notepad.

You need to convert the file to .mp3.

However ... my files are all .m4a. I'm pretty sure I didn't convert them. What you may need to do is create the playlist that lists your files. I'm going to have to remind myself, but I'm pretty sure I just copied my iTunes library to the USB stick and then used a simple playlist-creator (called M3U Dropper) to create the playlist-file (which has an extension .m3u) that MyLink is reading off the USB stick.

Maybe try getting hold of M3U Dropper, just copy two album's worth of your iTunes library to the USB stick, then use M3U Dropper to create a playlist on the USB stick - and see if that works? I seem to recall there was some effort in creating the playlist (lots of drag-and-drop action) so you'd want to test the process with only a few files.

*edit*
And of course the above text holds instructions for doing something you can't actually test yet ... :) ... maybe try it, then visit the dealer to see if it works on any Commodore?
