My nephew had J pipes on a ute, and the noise was horrible, I ever said the same to him, he has since changed them to something better.

this will depend on the rest of the system, i have them on both my Monaro and my Redline. Sounds great.

I think in some applications they will sound great. Depending what type of sound you like. I found they also didn’t have the “beat” sound I was chasing. The HSV factory mufflers and some others seem to produce that sound a little better. With the h pipe the smooth beat is even more pronounced.

have any of you considered j-pipes?

Yes I did,
But I would like a nice note, not a loud note,
I have heard some nice VE wagons of recent,
and I have been thinking, I can do this,

There is nothing like a V8 with a smooth deep note, [as I have heard on the SSV's] that doesn't attract attention, :D
Being in my job,
I don't want to attract attention,
I just to be able to kruse [no pun intended] around and the enjoy the note a V8 can produce. ;)

i binned my SSV mufflers, everything was stupidly quiet stock. The stock series 1 SSV sounds like a 4cyl.

I went from stock to full magnaflow 2.5" with 100cel cats, pacemaker headers and j-pipes. also chucked in a VCM OTR. Nice note without becoming a cop magnet.

Can never beat a full exhaust system.

What else do you have fitted?
I've got gm rex headers and cats with 3inch catback mild steel xforce. Wouldnt mind more crackle, what would achieve this?

'Crackle and pop' is all adjustable within the tune.
