towbars are designed and tested with the loads on the ball , fitting a bike rack will shift the load point up and further away from the intended load point , a bike rack acts like a long lever and can and has twisted or broken some tow bars or rear floors of vehicles hence the for towing purpose only stickers on the tow bars .

I have a holden tow bar fitted to my ssvr wagon, and there is a rubbery shroud that goes around the butchered area...mine doesn't fit real well, but I can fix that myself.

That looks like a genuine part? And would be harder to get right. Mine looks like Sir Les's which is more freeform but still does the job

Yes the towbar hitch does seem to stick out further on the wagon. I thought there was something wrong with mine when I got it, but all the wagons
I've seen with the genuine towbar, stick out.
From a quick inspection the the sedan and wagon mounting looks the same, put it down to the different shape of the rear bumper that makes it stick out on the wagon. Just got to watch your shins don't become a victim of the towbar.

$850 DIY or towbar specialist?
My local 3rd party just quoted me a neat $1000 for the Hayman Reece 2100kg towbar with harness and ECU (im sure he said ecu) for the harness.

Holden are fitting my 1600 tow bar today. I have asked for the plug to be installed in the boot with a flat cable. (Same cost - $880)

From what she said, It sounds like they are going to mount it there and I bring the trailer cable through to the boot. They mentioned possibility of crushing cable when boot closed.

Do I just buy a 1m flat cable extension?

I hate the look of the external harness.

IMO the external plug isn't that noticeable so it's probably an easier option. When I had my VS Statesman the dealer left the lead (with flat plug) inside the boot and I just had to hang it out whenever needed. Never got crushed in 8 years but maybe the lid didn't fit as tight as a VF? (also to consider the risk of scuffing the paint on the bumper when a lead is hanging over it)
