Yeah but he wants something that is easier to cart his 6ft+ mates around in.

Looking at CJ Lancers and same era Imprezas.
Out of the two, I'd go for the Impreza because of the AWD and the looks... What are your thoughts on a BMW or Mercedes of the same era, you can't go wrong with a well maintained 6 cylinder in either of these, and if you do the work yourself, you end up with a car which isn't too much more expensive to run and a luxurious German sedan...

If you like these cars but want something a little more reliable, how about an Lexus IS?

Make sure to avoid 4 cylinder BMW's, as they lack power, are unreliable and have similar economy to the I6...

Do Imprezza's have the same oil burning issues that some of the other Subi's do that have the Boxer engine? I know of a pretty new Subi that burns through 5L between oil changes. It's a work car at my Bro in Laws work. It uses so much oil they carry a 5L in the boot for regular top-ups. I was in it a couple of weeks ago and we had to pull over into a servo and add nearly 2L. We had dash chimes and light flashing telling us to top it up.

I doubt his budget is going to get him to any of those.

Combined with 1st year apprentice wages.....reliability / maintenance costs are important.

Bimmer with an M54 or N52, ISTA, full service history and a DIY can do attitude is hard to beat. I picked up a mint '06 E60 530 to replace the Magna. It has more features than a 2018 Jap car and I just added an Android 12" infotainment system that integrates with the CCC

Even looks like a current gen car and is like driving a cloud on rails

I guess, though the Mini is a BMW product and the engine used in those wasn't very reliable, generally...

Oh, and manual
You could find all of these in manual, but all are pretty hard to find, especially the Mercedes... You could find an second generation IS250, E46/ E90 3 Series manual, though what's the budget?

I quite like the E60 5 Series and would probably take a well maintained one of these over a Commodore or Falcon in the same price point, because it will probably have less kays and you get a nicer interior, though it will be a little more expensive to run...

That's why I'm wary of getting another bimmer.

His budget is 10ish.

Kms aren't really a concern on them if they are maintained, these things will do 500k. Find the right seller and it will be. Manuals are practically impossible to come by though and for me kinda kill the whole experience of a luxury barge. The ZF 6 speed is superb. Parts for it are cheaper than the VY, there's just a lot more of them that need maintenance
