most major brands will have a base model for around $250-300, but expect it to be basic, flat sounding and a harsh tweeter depending of the brand/model.
if you can strech your budget a bit more your input of money will make the SQ grow exponentionally!

no all i am saying is that ifyou spoend 300 on a set a 600 dollar set will usually sound more than only double better. hope that makes sence.

good thinkin :) i always ask when they r gettin new stock and new models ... coz they hoch the old stuff off cheap. I got my alpine headunit for $525 down from $825 coz its an old model. Its a really good unit too. I didnt even EQ it and it was pumpin better than my Kenwood was :p

just as i said before dont audition any speakers in the big places. go somewhere quieter, or even when that shop is quiet. cant make a good decision unless you can hear them!

As above, try and have a listen to the speakers that you're interested in. A car audio specialist store is a good place to start doing this.

The lower end focals sound quite nice to me, but I haven't heard any Pioneers so I can't compare them. Basically, just try to listen to as many different speakers as you can in your price range and go from there.

Audition whatever splits you can from focal, boston acoustics, hertz, mb quart, morel. Digital designs make some great ones now too so i hear. These are all superior to the mainstream brands IMHO. There are others too of course, but @~$300 those above shine.

You will need an amp to power decent splits properly.
