This is the first time I've ever heard of a 4 cylinder VN Commodore, and it really doesn't seem right at all... I realise NZ got some oddballs like an RB20 VL, but at least that was a 6 cylinder... How much longer did they put 4 cylinders in Commodores (obviously excluding ZB)?
VN was the last model, up until ZB. Personally I wouldn’t mind driving it just to see how it compares to my V6 VN.

They're very hard to come by though... I honestly had never known they existed before seeing this thread...

Holden also fitted a few VP Commodores with the 2.3 Turbo 4 cylinder from Saab... The engine made more power than the 3.8, but unfortunately they never went into production...

I believe they at least were easier to come by in NZ, however most by now would’ve been destroyed or engine swapped, same deal as the earlier Starfire Commodores.

Yes I believe the 4 cylinder model was for export. There were some other interesting models that were export only over the years.

There was a Saab sourced 4cyl turbo engineered for the VP and was ready for production.
For whatever reasons Holden did not proceed with it.
The Saab engine had 18% more power and slightly higher torque than the 3.8 v6.

thats probably why.

can't have the 4cyls outdoing the 6. Similar with the super6, had to make sure they didn't have it outdo the V8s

The V6 should have had a factory turbo option....

...but would have killed the V8!

Never understood why they didn’t do a turbo VE. Ford turboed the Barra and Holden just sat there and twiddled its thumbs when there were twin turbo and single turbo variants of the HFV6 in the GM catalogue.

888 engineering did the twin turbo V6 wagon....So it was a surprise it didn't go any further than that.....Weren't they getting Holden support at the time, or was it later on?
