V8s are still used in WA in small numbers, nearly all patrol cars are sixes though.
There are at least two WRXs getting around with plain clothes pilots.
Both white but there could be a third blue one.
The Police here have used some interesting cars over the years.
Cordia Turbos (four cops in Hawaiian shirts), Galant VR4, WRXs and many more.
In the early 80s there were a spate of bank robberies and the Police formed a "Super Response" team who had six XE 351 manuals at their disposal. These cars were something special and when they left on business you could here them all through the city. To see and hear them travel down Riverside Drive at high speed was a site to behold. These cars were all heavily modded and built by Police Force Mechanics.
Some believe that the Police are contracted to only use Holden or Ford vehicles. This is not true and indicates the manufacturer has the control which is not the case at all. They can use anything they like.
When the cars are delivered nothing is done to the bulk of the vehicles.
There are some however that are used for specific purposes that are modded, serviced and repaired in house ("never" worked on outside the force). At the end of their use by date (which is longer than for the standard cars) the external mods are removed before sale at auction or the vehicle may be destroyed.
People used to get down to the auction very early so they could go over them all in the hope of finding one of these cars. Compliance plates were identical but supposedly it was where and how the radio had been fitted, as they used a different radio, plus a few other things I can't recall which indicated if it was not the normal pursuit/patrol vehicle.

So I agree regular patrol vehicles are not chipped at all but some specialised vehicles may be but do not leave with anything but the stock chip.

Your 2 cents worth keeps the urban myth alive.

My old man joined the MIG, Division 79, in 1979. He drove both the XD and XE Falcons along with VK BT1`s, VLT and the VL8. These "Worked" Falcons only exist in your mind.Every XE 5.8 Falcon from Div 79 based at Plain St was an auto, that also goes for every Commy and Falcon The only mod was turning the aircleaner lid upside down, which was frowned upon by thier operational commanders, sounded good but he didnt think it increased hp.These external mods you speak of????an arial mounted to the left hand side quarter does in no way increase performance of any vehicle. The only manual RTA (as it was known)car he evr drove was a yellow XD 5.8 out of Geraldton doing long haul h/way work

Morgasshk how fast do u get from 0-100?

a guy in my town just got a vy ex cop car an he rekons its still got the "polioce chip" in it an rekons it goes from 0-100 in 6.8 secs?
does that sound right?

is it possible that some cop cars get a chip an some dont. for instance rural police?

The only extra chips rural police cars have over metro police cars are stone chips.

I'll tell you what, Dr Bob and myself have reprogramed alot of chips from BT1's over the years and neither of us has ever seen one that wasn't a normal tune so that's pretty much the end of that (normal being the offical Holden tunes some of which are the hsv style tune)

I'm taking Foamy's answer as a final answer....... Can't get it any clearer than that IMO.

my friend was at the traffic lights once i was in the passenger seat and this ss comm came up and he started reving his engine and everything so my mate being himself floored it and got to about 150km then on came the lights, yea he lost his licence but he learnt his lesson also, the cops in my area are pricks mainly because we had the highest rating of hoons

Your mate being himself... other than that being badly worded... well yes... who else would he be?

And I don't see how the cops in your area are pricks... why are cops pricks when they do their job? I don't get that... :bang:

There is no law against reving your engine at the lights unless your making alot of noise last i checked... there is one about breaking the speed limit...

I think good on them for egging on idiots to drag race... mainly because... it will get those idiots off the roads... I'm all for cops having monster skylines with for sale stickers on the back and P-plates busting idiot drivers...

Anyway... this is off topic... so lets leave it at that...

um, technically. the v8 vn-vs cop car was fitted with a v8 185 kw tune?? i dont know if the engines are the exact same as the standard 165 v8, the cop cars were standard commodores equiped with all the ss **** except the body kit. although i do know that the v8 cop cars also had better fuel econemy cruising its possible but i know they are all 185kw hsv tunes

um no theyre not.
some VS police pack used the HSV 185kw pack to reduce underbonnet temps when in a high speed situation.
some had a bigger radiator fitted (nicknamed MAD MAX)
i know this as i was doing the developmental testing at that time
