Yes, technically safer in a crash but probably involved in more crashes than its old brethren

Having an iPod screen in my peripheral vision is very distracting for me.
Ancient hand operated controls for various things ............... you know where they are, and can feel for them while watching the road.
Screen operated controls ....... you have to look at the screen and touch the correct icon.
But that is a Grand-dad view of the driving world today.

Talking with an equally old mate the other day, and wondering how many younger drivers would be able to start a car with a choke, and drive it with 3 pedals and a gear lever.
And, yes, I know that is so last century, but ............... ;)

New cars are safer than old cars in a crash (Takata issues aside).

There are plenty of YouTube videos showing 20 year old (or greater) models crashing into their modern brethren. From these videos it’s obvious newer is safer.

and new small car crashing into old Holden

Having said that, I wonder how many crashes occur in modern cars because of all the new gadgets these modern cars contain which create a lot of driver distraction. Yes, technically safer in a crash if your in a new car but maybe you’d probably be involved in more crashes than if you were in its old brethren without those distractions

Yes they are safer in a crash, but prevention is always better than the cure.....

Yes modern gadgets are a distraction, but in general I see the younger generation haven't actually been taught to drive properly.....eg we look from one side footpath to the other side footpath, rather than inbetween the 2 white lines....

Yes last century, but as I see it, going back to basics and actually learning how to drive, not just steer.... :)

Yes, muscle memory is rather important when operating complex equipment where taking eyes off the task can be lethal, such as when controlling a motor vehicle.

Oddly many within the industry didn’t think Tesla’s touch screen controls were safe. But Tesla loved it as the UI is easily upgradable as compared to physical stuff and is a differentiating “feature”. So it remains and is sadly making it’s way into all sorts of motor vehicles. After all, add bling bling sells.

None of these distractions, be they these poor virtual UI or disctractions via unnecessary features (not required for the task of driving) are conducive to a safe drive environment.

Me, I’m old fashioned so I’d require a higher level of skill to be demonstrated before a license is granted. And if you want a tow a trailer, that also needs to be tested by requiring the driver to reverse back around a corner so he can get his license endorsed for towing. Driving skills these days are non existent.

True story ..... my first experience of driving an auto back about 1966. My dad had a Rambler, indicator on LHS of column.
He said that I could drive it to the servo for petrol. As I approached the driveway into the servo, I jammed on the brakes to change gear, and nearly ripped the indicator stalk out of the column to change down to 2nd.
As @Skylarking said .... " muscle memory is rather important when operating complex equipment ". .......... but not in this case.

The big problem now is the cost of repairing cars given all the technology involved in them and difficulty in repairing them. As soon as you require any kind of engine or gearbox repair on a car worth 5 grand or less the car is basically bin fodder if you cant do the work yourself.

Yeah I know the pain there, spent way too much last year on my old bus, probably twice or three times what it could be sold for and its still an old jalopy. Part of the problem I have found is PO's knowing it holds little resale value, so any repairs are done as cheap as possible and if it gets botched, don't worry, flog it and it then becomes the problem of the new owner......

nsw annual rego inspections on light vehicles /motorcycles from 5 years old makes it hard to prove they are unsafe only thing i can see to get older vehicles off the road if they introduce emissions test
