weren't a lot of the dragways chrome/steel so they all rusted over time?

They are two piece. Steel band with alloy centre. Yeah the chrome gets scraped off from gutter rash and they rust.

Personal opinion, but anything over a 16" wheel on an early Commodore makes them drive like crap....Tram tracking, rough as all guts over bumps just for starters....

So if it was me, I'd be down sizing on the diametre you're looking at

I'm pretty set on 17s they just seem like a good size for the car, and I plan on upgrading the suspension eventually to improve drivabilty. The classic 5 spoke Dragways only go to 15", so even at 16" I'm going billet :/

Ouch.

I reckon 15s are a good size for 1st gen.

Might have to go 15 because they're cheaper. Either way I'll need to throw on some VT/VX mags on it to get me by until I can afford them...as much as it pains me to say.

I went old school on my build with 17x8 and 17x9 chasers. Managed to squeeze 275's on the rear. It's a great balance of comfort vs performance. I imagine they could work well on early models too
