My daughter just got a 2006 Renault scenic. ...[with] about 6 million air bags.
Pop them all and see if the car doesn't get written off because of the cost to replace them.
Of course, if it saves your life in the process, that's different.

This isn't from a Renault, but it sure as hell looks like you'd have the comfiest crash ever

Astras are shocking, don't ever consider buying one. They are stupidly expensive to repair and maintain (timing belt changes $$$) and they are notorious for bad wiring/electronics, often killing ECU's for no apparent reason and costing a lot to fix.
For something different, thats very safe, relatively compact and economical, why not consider a volvo s40? You can get the 1.9L turbo which is pretty powerfull for such a small sedan and they have a pimp interior too :p

She's 18 so unsure if she can drive a turbo on her p's? mainly just wants something safe, good on fuel and easy to use. Will be using my car for longer trips.

My personal advice would be to do as my daughter did. Buy a $3000 Corolla and drive it for a couple years. Make a few mistakes, reverse into a few trees, all good. Cheap to run, cheap to replace. A few years down the track, buy a brand new car.

Already considered that, can't argue with what she wants haha. Tried telling her but then calls me a hypocrite as my first car was my sv6 4 years ago and I've had no accidents.
