well look at spending around the $20k mark for a gu 4.2 td (although cheaper ones do pop up every now and then but get snapped up just as quick ) and the 4.2 factory turbo diesel 80 series cruisers, (which if i had to buy another 4x4 would be the model i'd want) are more available in auto's than manual (still good, but detracts from the driving experience) and a good manual your looking at around the $16k mark and up, although most are already modded (normal mods incl, 2" lift, 33" muds or all terrain tyres) winch, spot lights and rear drawer setups)
also don't be afraid to look at the late 90-early 2000 model prado's, very capable, and really comfortable,
best to start doing some research, find out the pro's and cons of both vehicles, cruiser v patrol, and then add to that the type of driving you intend on doing, then the mods your goin to want to do to make that kind of driving easier,
