I had a top of the line Sony unit with the 4v preouts etc from 10+ years ago. It performed faultlessly for the entire time and there was nothing to complain about apart from the screen not being bright enough in bright sunlight
None of the Sony stuff inspires me atm, especially in the looks and features department. sound quality: dont be fooled, even $50 CD players basically do a perfect job of reproducing the sound and given most of us dont have $20000 studio monitors in our cars or golden ears, the difference between top and bottom of the line wont be noticeable. Also most of us will now be using ipods and mp3,4 tracks, which to me are near indistinguishable from CD in a car environment
Look at the operating features, use of use, outputs etc, steering wheel controls, ipod control and info displayed on screen. Also if you are looking at playing mp3s from usb look specifically at how quickly it will load tracks and display info, or actually display info, most of them dont do a good job in this regard.
My last purchase was decided solely on the quality of the display, whether it was bright enough to be able to be seen in direct sunlight and that the display was suitably dim for night driving. Most of the current offerings have too many coloured backlights that cant be muted, and were quickly struck from my list which unfortunately didnt leave much on offer
I eventually ended up with a clarion dxz586usb which has proven to be good so far, the most annoying feature which I compromised on was the lack of a rotary vol control, up/down buttons are the pits and of course like every other aftermarket unit dumped onto the australian market the vol contol is on the wrong side(left) of the unit.
If youve got $1500 to spend, $200 on the hu and spend the rest on the stuff that will make a difference to the sound, speakers and amps.
If you only spend $200 on the speakers, then you really only have something that sounds like $200 worth even with a $500 hu.....but then again, you dont have to spend the earth to find good speakers.
Are the pioneers any good? Dont know, one of them did make my shortlist on being suitable, but got a better price on the clarion
Unfortunately shopping for these units and testing out all the operating features is a nightmare. Most of the sales assistants dont know how to access all the features of a unit and when you ask will it do x, they claim it will and just tell you it will be all in the operating manual. Unfortunately they dont have the operating manual there for you to see how its done, so you either have to believe them or move on.
It may be an unreasonable ask to have some sales buffoon learn how to work every unit they are selling, but if that is too hard, at least put out the manuals(tie them down if they have to) so the customer can work it out if the salesman cant be bothered.
