Hi Losh, Iv'e been following along with your steering collumn problem for a while and thought
of something.
The steering collumn on my VR SS is adjustable Up and Down and also Backwards
and Forwards.
Could it be that the column has been adjusted too far forward ( when the wheel was off )
and preventing full insertion of the wheel when attempting to put back on.
I guess that a VS may not have an adjustable steering wheel anyway.
Just a thought. :)

VR's have adjustable column but not ute, or at least not column shift ute.

Anyone else have an idea? I thought maybe the shaft was 90deg out but I don't think it is, as the inside uni joint wouldn't have fitted as the bolt slot would be out too.

Any Column Shift model has no personal adjustment in any parameter. They are just a solid bolt up.

Little update...I happened to be in the right place at the right time for @losh1971 and found a replacement steering wheel for a very very cheap price....Just got to head back to the place tomorrow, where I found it and remove it for him.

When he gets it, there might be more additions to this thread when he gets the new steering wheel :p

Can't be...The shaft rotates 360 degrees.....The shaft also fits in one position on the rack shaft....(Hope that makes sense)

No I was thinking 180deg not 90, oops. Yeah ok well it can't be that then. I have no idea on how to centre the firewall uni joint. It wasn't a problem until I fitted the wheel two days ago. Last week when I had trouble it wasn't off centre, or at least it wasn't rubbing and squeaking and no knock/click either. Although it takes a full lock to get click/knock.

I think the column has collapsed if you hit the shaft removing the wheel, possibly why the bottom bearing is moving .

Is there a bolt holding the column to the pedal box? Is so, is there a little slop within the bolt hole, to allow you to move the column up and down a little bit.

Worth looking at to help solve your issue

Nope not collapsed I took the measurement. Bottom bearing is not loose either.
