Off to the wreckers with it then. My old SV6 started doing something similar, I would put it in drive but it would stay in neutral and I would have to kick it in the guts to make it go into gear.

I got another year or so out of it by changing the fluid and filter twice and changing out the shift solenoids but it eventually packed it in.

The 5 speed 5L40E is rare as hens teeth and expensive to rebuild. I got quoted about $5-6k pre covid so probably more expensive now. It’s also not guaranteed to last either as others on here have had rebuilds fail within a relatively short period of time (@Fu Manchu).

5sp auto yeah
Bugger, best go to a trans shop and have them tell you its going to be expensive. Where are you located? Craig's Transmissions is a great auto builder.

If you insist on keeping the car it would probably be easier and cheaper to convert it to a manual transmission than deal with the 5L40E.

VZ Crewman, VZ Cross 8, & ya mum.
Manual conversion it is. The 5L40 is an expensive and difficult gearbox to have overhauled properly. You would expect $5000-$6000.

Manual swap it
